"Nevada law does not expressly prohibit the open carry of handguns. A person may carry a handgun without having a CCW permit as long as the gun is not hidden/concealed on their person (ie, in a hip holster). The handgun must be clearly visible."

Thats what the law says.
Excuse my ignorance on this but I just moved here.
Why don't I see more people walking the streets with a firearm on them?

If they allowed this in NYC {never gonna happen} EVERY 21 year old would have a gun the day they could legally do it.

Do most people have a CCW permit {carrying a concealed weapon}?
I'm in the process of getting one....but I'm curious why I don't see more NON-concealed guns on people.

Probably because it's just asking for trouble. I've seen maybe two people with guns showing while living here.

Not a great idea my friend. Metro frowns on that.

NLV does not allow you to carry a loaded gun in a vehicle at all.

Don't wear a gun on your hip, just asking for trouble. Get CCW.

Nevada is very pro gun, Las Vegas not so much. They will shoot you and ask questions later. Stay away from Costco as well.

I've been known to carry both open and concealed. I prefer concealed as I don't want to give the bad guys any advantage, and knowledge of what I am carrying and where is most certainly a very large advantage.

And anyone carrying a gun for the right reasons will agree with you. I think the only people openly carrying are just trying to look cool and/or make up for a lack of confidence.

The simple answer is, you're looking for the wild west of the old cowboy movies. That just doesn't exist anymore. There were still traces of it in the 60's, but it's been gone for a long time.

As others have said, it may not be illegal, but that doesn't mean you'll be left alone if you are carrying. Most people who are not gun owners feel threatened if they see someone carrying a handgun. They most probably will call Metro. If they do, it's called "disturbing the peace." If you are cited, it's a misdemeanor.

Metro has the right to stop you and question you (they have that right with anyone for any reason). If they think you might be a bad guy, they might also decide to make you get down on the ground, twist your arms behind you and cuff you. After they decide you are not a threat, you might get an apology, but probably not.

Personally, I don't think it's worth the trouble, much easier to get a ccw and carry concealed if you feel the need. And also as mentioned above, the only way to carry in North Las Vegas or Boulder City is with a ccw. And in NLV, they mean it, even if you have a ccw, if your firearm is in the car and not on your person, you are still in violation. Not sure about Boulder City.

Thanks for the replies.
Like I said, I have no intention of walking with it exposed.
Just curious....

Jeez, I do remember the last time I've ever seen an open carry was back in the early 90's. My sis was visiting and we were walking down the Strip near the MGM...and a guy on a motorcycle goes crusing down the street and he has a gun on each hip. I remember some of the tourists who were walking along with us were SHOCKED to see this.

For Las Vegas, carrying concealed is just so much easier and so much less of a hassle. Most of the time, if you are about to enter a place where no weapons are permitted, you'll be asked to go to the Security Desk and they'll hold your weapon for you until you are ready to leave the property.

I liked your post Exaday, stay away from the Costco in Summerlin with your weapon INDEED

Ironic, you can BUY guns at costco but you can't carry them.
