Tomorrow, April 12, Las Vegas Review Journal is having a job fair at the Suncoast.

This will be my first job fair. Judging by the older threads I've read here at CD, these events aren't the best way to land a job.
I'll bring copies of my resume and wear a suit just in case.

Does anybody have any more info on what to expect?
Thanks in advance.

airics is correct, total waste of time.

Many of the companies like Station Casinos won't even take your resume' instead tell you to apply online So why the h*ll are you even here in the first place?????

A few years ago I went to one at Texas Station and it was an absolute zoo. Many of the positions are sales jobs in insurance or timeshares, then you have others like MGM that only allow you to apply to one position at a time which is nuts.

Honestly, you're better off seeing the list of companies and applying at their offices so you can get face to face with a hiring manager rather a clerk that is going to take your resume and add it to the other 500 people that show up in ratty blue jeans, shorts and other various wardrobe disasters.

If you go...do something radical...so you'll get noticed. A sandwich board...or showing up surrounded by 5 showgirls/strippers...something like that.

If you go, my advice is be charming, but not gross and over the top about it. Always dress professionally, and be conversational with the company reps there.

A few years back, my now ex went to a job fair, and a casino (not in Vegas) was represented, but they were only hiring servers and kitchen staff. He struck up a conversation with the HR rep and within a week he had an interview for Marketing Manager, which he got. So I think it can pay off to go and try to get noticed, even if the jobs they are hiring for aren't right up your alley.

I disagree. If you go into a job fair expecting to be hired on the spot, you'll almost certainly be disappointed. But if you go in with the goal of making additional contacts for down the road, it can be productive. What you've done is often secondary to whom you know nowadays.

Desparate times call for desparate measures...get CRAZY!

A "few years ago" was a hole 'nother ball game.

If you go expecting to be signed up for a job on the spot...or even to get an interview...you will go home feeling dejected and disappointed, leading to self-doubt. If you go to have a good time...you'll go home in better frame of mind...and may even get a call out of the deal. Take charge of the situation...rather than the situation taking charge of you. Good luck.

I went to that one too ! What a joke...

( I was employed back then, went with a friend, and at the time was very grateful I had a job, because it looked like getting a ride on the Moon Shuttle would happen before getting a job at their Job Fair...... )

So I went and saw the entire thing in under a half hour.
Nothing I'd be interested in. Lots of people though.
I'm sure somebody found some of that info useful.
I'll go again in the future.

Take some of your passport size photographs (just in case), some companies do ask for it. Take your educational certificates and other important certificates too.
