Default Taxi trip numbers suggest increase in tourist visits

Channel 3 just had this story on the news...

Statistics compiled by the Nevada Taxicab Authority, which regulates cabs only in Clark County, show a big increase in taxi trips for March and the for first three months of 2011.

And oh boy, with the increase in gas prices, even those "short" taxi trips cost a lot!!

More people are getting DUI's and have suspended licenses, so they take cabs now.

Yep, tourism up....but gambling revenue down.

Las Vegas...the next Atlantic City???...God forbid!

Deutsche Bank gaming analyst Bill Lerner said Las Vegas visitors are just not spending the same amount of money on gambling they have in the past. Reduced hotel room rates and other incentives are starting to drive visitation but not spending.

"It's going to take time to recover," Lerner said. "These companies have done as much as they can to cut expenses to mitigate declining revenues."

jfkIII view: Las Vegas was built..and sustained...by attracting gamblers...not non-gambling tourists. If gambling doesn't increase, the existing Las Vegas model does not work. Las Vegas will tumble like dice on a craps table...unless there's some sort of major reinvention of it.

I was there four days this week at the Mirage, and spent some time also over at Treasure Island. There were so many people that it took time to make your way through the casinos. Still, there was no problem finding a vacant slot or blackjack table. In my group of six, I think the total spent gambling amounted to about $200, and one guy won more than that. We did spend quite a bit more on food and drinks, and yes, cabs. Those guys are good at taking a round about route to run up the meter.

You really have to stop cooking the books JFK...tell it like it is not how you wish it were.

You can find 2009 RJ articles but not the recent ones...

Well if this is true that would be a good thing for me as one of my clients caters to the drivers which means more revenue for my business

May be coincidental with NAB just ending and spring break last week but a lot of people are coming and spending money again. A lot of product sold on both my strip and non-strip clients and I hope the trend continues through the summer.

LOL.

I guess that's a polite way of telling him that his reading comprehensioin skills are a bit lacking.

(And that's a bit tame as well, but necessary to remain within tos.)

I pity a person who, in an attempt to bring some sort of twisted pleasure into his own miserable life, spends his time researching years-old newspaper articles trying to find negative information so that he can post it to an Internet message board in an attempt to antagonize the people who frequent that board and live in that city.

What a pitiful life he must lead.
