Driving down E. Fremont the other day and I noticed that the Urban Lofts project has expanded from the 11th St. location to a second site at Fremont and Eastern, just west of the infamous Blue Angel motel.

After reading scores of posts on this board about which areas to avoid and which areas are best to live in, it strikes me as inconceivable that there is a market for 2000 sq. ft. townhomes in the middle of one of Las Vegas' notoriously dangerous and seedy neighborhoods.

Is this the beginning of an actual renaissance in this area? Are young movers and shakers really going to neighbor up with the down and out? Arts District is one thing, but East Fremont loft living is almost the equivalent of building a loft on H and Bonanza (there is actually a project on Main and Bonanza, incredibly).

How do you think this is going to shake out over the next 5,10, 20 years? For a city with such a rigid divide between acceptable and unlivable parts of town, this could be a sign that our city is actually growing up.

the district is definite crap, i wouldn't want to live there, absolutely terrible stores, awful security, awful store hours, not convenient to much, have to deal with the idiots from the neighboring community and the casino, and have to deal with all the traffic of the area...its got no amenities of a real urban lofty place, not conducive to walking...

i think the 11th Street lofts will turn out to be fine, but the ones at Eastern and Fremont may not, but time will tell, further south on Eastern is fine but there are no lofty areas along that part of Eastern...

You go first and maybe I'll follow you. Ha. Following my deevorce in 1970 I spent some time at the Blue Angel. It was a dive then and not very safe. I'm truely surprised it wasn't bulldozed 20 years ago. Only a fool would buy anything in that area.

That's what I'm wondering too. Are the people buying these lofts fooled into believing that it's anywhere but in a dodgy dodgy part of town? Or do they know this and is it the beginning of a major overhaul?

I know Station Casinos is hanging onto a large chunk of land that was once the Showboat right near there as well. It's common in other cities for developers to buy up the worst parts of town and single handedly revive them with new construction....
