Or unless people inadvertently provide food for them.

Oh. Well that's very different.

Never mind.

Honestly, I don't think anyone can say for certain whether or not you'll run into a scorpion. I've lived in Henderson since 2005 & I've never found one around my house. I've always heard that they're closer to the mountain areas, until my boyfriend (who works at a Senior Apt. Complex on 11th st. & Fremont, nowhere near the mountains) came home w/one that was found crawling around the inside of a light fixture in the main office, above everyone's head! They called out an exterminator who found a few more & confirmed they were Bark Scorpions & that they were coming in from the air ducts. So, it is possible for them to pop up just about anywhere!

Scorpions have a natural affinity to palm trees. Got a lot of palms? Then it's likely there are a lot of scorpions as well. They are easily detectible with a UV "black light." Just shine the light outside, at night. You'll see them in your yard, if they're around.

We have palm trees all around our pool. To this day I still have not seen a scorpion in the 10 years I have lived here in Vegas!

You have a scorpion sleeper cell. One day someone will turn over the Queen of Hearts and they will attack your cat.

I've not lived in Las Vegas yet...El Paso TX and Yuma AZ yes. I have seen more scorpions in residential areas of El Paso than anywhere! Those little nasty pink ones like to climb up walls and into windows!

So, are you more likely to have scorpions in a brand new neighborhood at the edge of development that may have already been scorpion habitat before the new homes went in or in an older pre-xeroscape mandate neighborhood with lots of water-hungry plants and lawn watering attracting scorpions and insects to the source of water?

I don't understand the "coming in from the air ducts" comment. Do you mean the scorpions were in the attic and the ducts where not sealed and insulated enough to keep scorpions from climbing in and walking through the ductwork?
The HVAC units I've seen do not draw air in from the outside of the house, but from their air intake where you change your filter (usually in the ceiling).

Nevermind. I found out how it can happen.
