Default Scorpions?

Moving to green valley ranch in a couple weeks from chicago. The rental house has "desert" landscaping. Rocks? My step-daughter has gotten it into her head that this type of landscaping has scorpions hiding in it & she is freaking out & begging us to put in grass (um, it's a rental). So, how common are these things? Are they more common in the desert landscaping than grass? Does an exterminator have any power over them? while I am not willing to put grass in a desert (or pay to water it) I would be willing to have a bug person come out regularly. Thanks! (ps, yes I know we have worse bugs in the midwest. I can't wait for no more mosquitos!)

Ya scorpions have been talked to death here. The bug problem here is seriously nothing compared to just about any other part of the country. The scorpions rarely show up and when they do they seem to be in isolated areas. The only thing that seems to be across the board in the valley is roaches. Having a watered yard will invite them all to you too. Despite the efforts of horror movies, scorpions don't come out looking to sting you to death. Unless you're dancing around your backyard in bare feet in the middle of the night you probably wouldn't even run a risk even if you did have them hiding in your yard. Do a quick google search and read up about any animal you're afraid of and you'll find that 99% of them want absolutely nothing to do with you.

Yeah, that desert landscaping is full of desert critters, like rattlesnakes, coyotes, and mountain lions. Please. Ya want scorpions? Go to Arizona. We ration ours.

Here's a tip. Don't call it "desert" (or dessert) landscaping. Call it Xeriscape Gardening. You can admire some great examples when you get here by visiting these gardens. Gardens Around the Valley

You will be surrounded by thousands of square miles of desert when you get to this oasis called Las Vegas. But you will probably see more bugs within the city of Chicago than in all of Nevada. Planting grass would just increase your bug "risk". Oh, yeah, and your dog will love it here where there are NO FLEAS!

¿By the way, do you know that Las Vegas means "The Meadows" in Español?

You said it. Just the other day I fought off 3 mountain lions when I went out to water my plants.

meadows? Interesting. You make me laugh about the other critters, & we have coyotes here too. I would have given her a sarcastic answer but shes an extremely sensitive child (rough divorce of her parents). I'll read through those other threads when I can, I think I've seen at least 1 before, just wanted to ask specifically about the grass thing while I had a moment. I need to figure out where she got this idea from.

I've seen great gardens, but this house isn't it it's dirt, sand, rocks and a tree &a couple bushes. Really almost exactly like planned communities here except with different types of bushes & dirt instead of grass! I'm not a fan of the ones here either

During my few ventures all through the to dig up weeds, have not seen one scorpion, but did see something the resembled a black widow (black, big body, long skinny legs).. but think that was on a plant on the neighbors side (had a weed right along the fenceline and had to dig a little under the fence to de-root it when the spider came rolling out).

Wile E. Coyote just bought the house down the street from me.. Apparently he is doing very well. Paid cash for the home and has a Lambo to boot... I saw the Lambo being delivered yesterday from Acme Products.. Its custom made with a rocket launcher and the back.

Poor coyote. He should give up & go lay by the pool.

I've lived here full time since '08 and part time since 1978. The only scorpion I've seen up close and personal was in Texas.
