i know las vegas is hurting, but then again, most other parts in the us is hurting as well. where are people moving to when they leave vegas, i wonder? Its way more expensive in california then vegas, so i am thinking their prospects are not any better if they move to a more expensive state where the job growth is any better.

IMO people that are resourceful and need employment are applying in several states and are moving when they have a solid offer. Moving to a new state to look for a job is not strategic or practical.

I JUST got back to work after a 3 month illness....and jumped RIGHT into the hiring/training/firing provess.... I don't know where all these 'unemployed' are...there are jobs out there....but being filled from the MOST unqualifyed pool of applicants I have ever seen. HOW can you be unqualifyed for an ENTRY LEVEL FRIGGIN JOB?

Resumes are FILLED with lies...While I was gone, my boss interviewed, and hired a lady with[allegedly] 4 years experience....on OUR specific hotel system. She was fired 10 days later for terminal stupidity...

Was Airics the only one out there with a brain.....?

The point is that NO ONE is even LOOKING for a job....and these are $10.00 an hour [entry level] jobs.

From whence they came.

Firstly remember that a huge contributor to the Las Vegas unemployment is/was construction.

Who are these construction workers? I divide them in two main categories.

Union and Non-union

Union- workers did most the public works, casinos, sky rises and condos. Remodels you name it. The demand for labor was so high that Las Vegas could not provide enough labor so we had to call on help from across the country and across the border. Many people worked out of their local unions as travelers here in Las Vegas. They have since returned home but still draw UI from Nevada if it is higher then the state they came from. For many people it is. For the locals that worked in construction you have guys that just two three years ago were making 125k a year running a sky crane. These people have no skills outside of construction so it is harder for them to just transition back to the workforce and of course they are not just gonna go work at McDonalds when UI pays them more.

Non-union- Mostly residential, largely undocumented. Many have migrated back to Mexico and many are still in this country traveling wherever they can find work. Probably easier for them since they did not become accustomed to living high on the hog like their union counterparts. Harder because they are undocumented.

Last but not least we have Strippers. Strippers depend on construction workers to earn a living. Not just strippers but many other business depended on the booming construction industry.

I think Exaday is right. Construction workers were hit the hardest. Something like 80% of them lost their jobs. But also hit hard was any business related to homes or construction from lumber suppliers to furniture stores. Equipment rental companies have gone out of business, and locations where I've seen cranes parked for the last 40 years are now empty lots. Furniture stores all over town have closed. The World Furniture Mart is either in bankruptcy or nearly so. Banks, mortgage companies, title companies, real estate offices have all been hurt badly. In the early 2000's we had something like 20,000 realtors here. I don't know, but I bet it's closer to 2,000 now.

For most of my life I've heard a lot of lip service about diversification. Nothing wrong with that, but if you have to be a one company town, it's nice that the company is in the tourism business. When things get tough, people take vacations. It's human nature to do whatever brings your spirits up. Visitor volume isn't down all that much. It would be nice if they could spend more, but at least they're still coming.

I also see stores full of people when we shop, and retail has always supplied a ton of jobs here.

People adapt and they survive. It's all they can do.

And those people who can't do basic duties are the ones driving next to you on the road. Scary isn't it?

They're also the ones who get hired into management.

I wouldn't totally say that as it depends what they want to do, what part of their life they are in etc. The cost of living varies quite a bit so if someone banks money in a more expensive area they can move to a cheaper place and search without having that much of a repercussion.
