The rugged Allegheny mountains are like speed bumps compared to the mountains around here. When we left Kingman we drove through Laughlin and took 95 to Vegas and we didn't think we would ever make it up the other side of that mountain coming out of Laughlin. I think we should have taken 93 instead.

In terms of altitude our mountains make the Appalachians look like speed bumps, but not necessarily in terms of steepness, or ruggedness. I come from The Mountain State originally, about 90 miles south of Pittsburgh. I'd much rather drive anywhere on I-40, or U.S. 93/95, than on Rt 50 East toward Washington, D.C. from Clarksburg. Mt. Charleston, to our west, is 2½ times higher than than the highest point in the WV Allegheny Mountains, but IMO the road is way better than a similar mountain road back east(not counting the Interstates that we never had when I was growing up in WV). Regardless of total altitude, if you fall off a cliff it won't matter which mountain is higher.

But don't worry, you'll get used to them. Unless you never leave town.

You know you are blessed that you broke down there and not in the middle of the desert here.
