If you live close to Black Mtn., or the Henderson Swamp, in new construction, that was bound to happen sometime. And, in my experience, the closer you get to the Colorado River the more likely you'll see snakes. It's one place you need to be a little more careful.

Rattlesnake bites are almost never fatal to humans, assuming treatment is obtained within 1-2hrs:

(from Wikipedia)
Rattlesnake bites are rarely fatal to humans, if treated promptly. Between 7,000 and 8,000 people are estimated to have been bitten by venomous snakes in the United States each year, and about five of those die. The most important factor in determining survival following a severe envenomation is the amount of time elapsed between the bite and treatment. Most deaths occur between 6 and 48 hours after the bite. However, if antivenom treatment is given within 1–2 hours of the bite, the probability of recovery is greater than 99%.

Probably 6000 of those are in Texas. Never saw so many big snakes as they have.

Yea, rattle snakes are no black mamba but it's certainly no joke to get bit by one. You'd probably be better off getting bit by a family of black widows. I'd imagine the high survival rate is also due to the fact that many snakes dry bite quite frequently. Especially if it's just a matter of you stumbling near them.

Realistically, the chances of seeing a snake are extremely slim. I worked outside for 7 years out there, the majority of the work in "new construction" areas on the outskirts of town, and out in the open desert on BLM land, etc - and I had only ever seen ONE snake (and it was out in Beatty).

More likely to see tarantulas or scorpions than a snake, for sure.

Especially if they have a cut in their mouth. Then not only does it look bad but they both get the venom.

I once told a girlfriend (while camping) that a snake bit me on my privates...and that I needed the venom sucked out.

It didn't work.
