Kind of a dumb question here (Henderson: car rental, apartment, foreclosure)

Hmmm across from Galleria Mall sounds FUN! LOL Is this in a decent area?
DOGGIE OK! AVAIL NOW, NO CREDIT CHECK! CLEAN HENDERSON CONDO (http://lasvegas.craigslist.org/apa/2488907438.html - broken link)
Sarah, first, you don't have to focus only on "no credit checks" you can also go for homes listed as "bad credit ok" AND the mainstream homes. Tell the listing agent or homeowner up front that you have bad credit due to previous job loss, but that you also have a good rental history, landlord references, a JOB, and are willing to pay additional security deposits or last months rent. You may even offer to pay the first few months in advance.
Secondly, you do NOT have to give up on the idea of Henderson. It's absolutely doable at that price. Go to Hotpads.com and chose Nevada, zoom in on Henderson and check the "rental" field only. Enter $1000-1200 in the price range, and maybe 3 bedroom (I am assuming). There are a ton of great single family 3 bed-2bath homes in that price range. Anthem, Silver Springs, Seven Hills, Green Valley. My mother just sold her house last week, but the previous 2 renters paid $1100. It was a 3/2 1200 sq ft. gated community with garbage, sewer, pest control and landscaping covered by the landlord. So I know it can be done.
You may have more trouble if looking for a duplex. They just aren't common in Las Vegas. The few that are there, are in much older less desireable parts of town.
The first one in Aliente, that's a nice newer area in North Las Vegas (no where near Henderson). The second one is in Henderson, but it's the Whitney Ranch area. A little older, not the pretty green, residential type areas. Of course close to shopping. I don't think you will have a problem. You don't have little young children, you aren't going to care about the schools. Are you set on a condo? Is there a price you won't go above? Do you have pets?

I have no small children. I'm not set on a condo at all. From reading this forum, I have learned not to rent a two story house because of cooling costs, but a one story house is fine. I need two bedrooms, though three are okay as well. I really need two bathrooms if possible, but of course if the perfect place fell from the sky and had only one bathroom I would take it.
My must haves are:
safe area (number one priority as I am coming alone)
near shopping
dishwasher
two or more bedrooms
one story unit, be it a condo, house, etc
CANNOT go above $1,100 and would prefer $1,000...but then, who wouldn't?HAHA
Outside of those requirements I am wide open to suggestion. I am a very easy going, adaptable person. I can make anywhere into a cozy home as long as it is in a safe area and I won't spend a fortune in gas getting to and from the stores.
Thanks for your encouragement.
I know people will call me a liar but I've mostly only rented and don't think I have ever had my credit score checked. I was always lead to believe that their was a different report that dealt only with renting history.
Anyways the idea sounds laughable. I would never rent from a person that did that either. Gorwing up I didn't use credit, my parents taught me it was bad and to always pay in cash. I always had the problem of not having a credit history which to me seemed strange. I felt like I was doing good by not being in debt and not getting a bunch of credit cards to max out. I feel like the government promotes debt.
You can rent without a credit score and don't let anyone say otherwise. Most people just want you to pay the rent on time.
Apartments who check normally use a tiered deposit system where you would pay a higher deposit for a lower score.
You can get a nice apartment for what you're looking to spend, just talk to them All they'll do is make you pay a higher deposit.
I've rented twice---once many years ago before becoming a homeowner and now again, after selling my home in NJ and renting a place in Vegas. Both times, a thorough credit history was taken and my credit was checked. Of everyone of I know who has rented, none have a story like yours; they have all had their credit checked and needed a fairly clean history to be approved. Now, these are generally condo and complex rentals, not renting a room or home from an individual, so maybe that would be different.
In this age however, with prospective employers running credit checks, it is unlikely that a potential landlord would not consider doing the same.
Sarah, we just signed a lease on Thursday after having flown out from Wisconsin for a few days to view property. We both have good credit, however, I think that if you're upfront with a realtor or property manager and offer the higher deposits I think that would go a long way. We used the realtor.com zip code searches to find possible locations and get an idea of what our budget could buy. I would advise contacting a rental agent as soon as you know your living requirements are (which it sounds like you do) and see if they'll help you out. Working with a rental agent is free, so you don't have anything to lose and they'd have a good idea of which companies/complexes may be willing to work with you. I do think it would be a good idea to have a few set up in advance, but I think it might be even easier to get viewings once you are actually in town. I found that landlords/realtors take you more seriously if you are in-town.
Also, that's a good resource that tortoise pointed out. Google also has a similar function. I also used Advanced Search - Search MLS Listings to find properties.

Good luck!
thank you for the encouragement! I contacted one of the agents from craigslist and he said to call him in August but he is confident he can find a place with my criteria, in Henderson even with my poor credit. I am so excited!

That's wonderful. I'm very happy for you. I've found this forum to be helpful as we relocate to LV and I'm happy to give something back to others here.
