So very sad but so very, very true. Particularly in Manufacturing. "Made in America" used to be the gold standard across the board for manufactured goods.

Unfortunately in the pursuit of quicker, easier profits we let our competitive advantage slide and now our name brand is almost meaningless.

Here is the latest on what is happening regarding the job market. Unfortunately with our continuing high unemployment housing isn't going to recover for a long time.

Career fairs give desperate hope

Now this is depressing. These hundreds of desperate people, huddled together, dressed in their best outfits, on a Wednesday morning, in a casino hallway, most of them clutching résumés like talismans, hoping for magic.

This is not your typical recession. It was caused by overbuilding which was the result of frivolous mortgage approvals all driven by the greed of the big banks and their appetite for more and more mortgages so that they could package them as AAA rated investment vehicles and make huge commissions on them.

We all know what happened, and now we are left with a glut of foreclosed homes. Vegas is one of the highest foreclosure areas and therefore will be one of the last places to see an economic recovery.

Housing is the cornerstone of a strong economy. When new houses are being built, the economy is growing. It's that simple. Vegas will be a few years behind the rest of the country for the simple fact that it will take longer for Vegas to get rid of their existing home inventory.

I feel the same way about England jfk. America and us have seemed to have similar
things happen to us this last 30 years. My home town used to be a hive of industry,
we had lots of engineering, cotton mills etc. My father worked in the truck building
industry most of hos working life. It was bought out by Koreans. After a few years
they closed it and re-opened in Korea. Margaret Thatcher destroyed the unions, and
it's been downhill since. No proper work. Good luck to the young, they'll need it.

It's actually 13.8% as of today, the highest since the beginning of the year.

That figure you posted in your thread title was from August of last year

Las Vegas jobless rate climbs to 14.8 percent - Friday, Aug. 20, 2010 | 6:42 a.m. - Las Vegas Sun

So, we're actually a bit better off on the unemployment issue this year as opposed to last year...same time. Still not good though

According to the article below, and like Olecapt mentioned, a lot of the increase in unemployment from last month to this month was government employees being laid off.

Casino jobs rose a bit, mostly due to the Spring/Summer season and the uptick in visitors

What's the point. Vegas is fracked! Unemployment will continue to rise in the next quarter.

Hooray, first time unemployment claims this week in the USA was "only" 398,000 this week. The MSM thinks this is a reason to celebrate.
