Hear me out, obviously it would be expensive but what about an aqueduct? Carrying water from the Los Angeles coast to Las Vegas where it would be desalinized (or possibly distilled using the heat in death valley). Waste water could also be reused. This would create an ever lasting supply of water and allow growth to continue. People could probably even have lawns again. Comments?

Fiscally unfeasible desalinating and then pumping that much water this high up.

Get rid of the invasive tamarisk trees along the Colorado River that suck up as much water annually as everyone in Las Vegas, and we don't have any problems.

Oh, I forgot, some local bird nests in the trees, so we can't cut them all down.

More ridiculous government stupidity.

Well that's just kind of trading one environmental evil for another. Cutting down trees that absorb water solves nothing. And what do you mean this high up? It would be desalinated in the valley?

Duh, how much energy do you think it takes to move a kilogram of water from sea level to the height of the valley floor (and over the mountains between here and the ocean)?

Desalinization plants require copious amounts of water to dilute the resulting effluent. You only build them where you have a way to dilute or otherwise dispose of this effluent. Practically desalinization plants need to be on the shore of large bodies of water.

So any desalinization is going to take place in CA. If that is done you would use the water there. That could displace Colorado River water for use in Nevada or elsewhere.

Note the liklihood that CA will agree to desalinization plants in any number on their cost is somewhere between zero and none.

Perhaps in Baja. But an enormously complex and difficult task.

Make a lot more sense for Las Vegas to pump from the north.

And, if OP would do his research, he would learn that we really can solve our water problems by cutting down a lot of trees (which don't belong here in the first place).

I think that pumping water from the northern countries is a poor idea. Las Vegas has to learn to live with the water supply that it currently has. My suggestion is that for every new casino that somebody wants to build, then an old casino has to be demolished. Same thing for houses and apartments. Stablize the population at 2 million and per capita income will rise, educational levels will increase and economic diversify will occur. Urban renewal is the way to go.

That is never going to happen. Sooner or later Vegas is going to have another population boom. Your idea is simply unrealistic especially with the thousands of acres of undeveloped land in Clark County. People are going to continue to expand and the urban sprawl will grow. Politicians and scientists aren't looking at ways of stopping the population. Instead they're looking at ways to meet demand.
