I just moved here from Illinois and I'm looking for a job. I still have my old driver's license, but do I need a Nevada one in order to get hired?

It certainly won't hurt.

Finding your first job in this town is hard. In my experience, nobody wants to deal with newcomers because too large a percentage leaves within months of arriving. You'll have to convince employers that you're here to stay at the interview -- along with all the usual interview question.

If you're applying for culinary/bartending/casino work, get your health/tam/sheriff's cards as well.

Good luck... this could take awhile.

You have 30 days after moving here to get a Nevada driver license, and to register your car. You might not get a job as a driver without one, but it's not going to keep you from being hired most places. You do not need health cards/sheriff's cards/TAM cards until you are actually hired in a job that requires them. The Sheriff's card requirements have drastically changed. You get those through the employer if you need one. Once you are hired at a job that requires a health card, or a TAM card, be prepared to spend some time and money getting those cards. Not sure about the fingerprint requirements these days. Check that out with Nevada JobConnect. Employment Security Division Job Seeker Services

I don't mean to be contrary. But having spent the better part of a year looking for culinary work, I've found that it's pretty-much expected that applicants have their health card.

I can't say that not having one is an automatic deal breaker, but I've been asked to present my health, tam and servsafe cards at interviews.

Was hoping to bump this up instead of starting a new thread. Can anyone else comment on getting a job with an out of state DL (California)? Rather then fork over tons of money up front to swap over DL, registration, insurance etc. I would prefer to wait until I get a job to take care of this. Yes, I know the state requires it all be done within 30 days but I plan to drive my California car with my California DL anyways for now so please don't post links to dmv site or what not. Looking for experiences or information on JOBS with out of state DL. Thanks.

Not sure what you are looking for but NV DL enhances your chances of getting a job. Although have a NV address is the most important.

How do you propose to claim or prove residency without one ? And once you switch your DL, if stopped or in an accident, you will get a ticket for failure to register. Vegas is an extremely transient town, and LEO has heard every excuse known to man...If you genuinely plan on calling Nevada home, it might be wise to deal with those things, (DL , registration ) first.

Failure to register can cost you 1k...if cited and transferred prior to trial it could be reduced to 200....Let your conscious be your guide ! Most of the employers I know, require proof of residence....and presenting an out of State DL only suggests that the law as applies to the rest of us, you see as optional...not exactly a great first impression !

One last thought, that 30 day time frame does exist, however if you review the statute, once you obtain in State employment...your clock stops...

And just think of all the "Locals Discounts" you are missing by not getting your hands on a NV Driver License! Just do it!

No... you do NOT need a NDL to be hired, even for a DOT position.

but eventually you will have to get one, specially if you want to drive here for a living.

also, some places use the DL license for determining state tax withholding... out of state they MAY use that state and withhold taxes... some companies do not.
