Default Thinking about moving to Henderson, NV. Advice?

Hi everyone, I currently live in Chicago, IL near the suburbs(in a great part of Chicago) and am married and have a 3 month old daughter. My husbands brother in law lives in Las Vegas and works for a big company in contrustion in which he makes alot of money. A few weeks ago he offered my husband a job over there making alot more money than he is making now. Right now we are struggling with money and moving over there would make our lives so much easier because he will be bringing in alot more money to take care of our family. If we move it has to be within a month and a half because his brother in laws boss is hiring people asap so we have to make a decision fast.

We will most likely be living in Henderson in the Camden Commons or Wildhorse estates in Green Valley. We've been thinking about this alot and the pay sounds great but I have many concerns. One being the extreme hot weather. Yes it gets really hot in Chicago during summer time and the humidity is Horrendous but in Vegas it's excessive dry heat. I visited last summer and the people we were staying with had problems with their AC and I thought I was gonna die of heat stroke. It's too hot for a windy city girl like me. And I'm afraid my daughter will get heat exhaustion or dehydration. We wouldn't be able to walk down the street or go to the park because my baby wouldn't be able to handle the heat so we would be cooped up inside where the AC is most of the time.

I'm also worried about the crime over there. I know Henderson is one of the nicer neighborhoods over there but I keep reading about the horrors of living in Las Vegas and the horrible school systems and violence. We would only be living in Henderson two years if we decide to move there so I wouldn't worry about my daughter going to a crappy school. This would be temporary. I keep hearing vegas is the worse place to raise a family so I'm very confused and indecisive. I wanna keep my daughter safe and don't wanna regret moving there.

Can anyone currently living there or people who used to live there give me the pros and cons? Much appreciated. Please give me the facts and past/current experiances about living there.

It generally does not get hot until close to noon. So you have 5 or 6 hours of reasonable temperature before it gets warm. Note that 100 degrees in Las Vegas is reasonably tolerable if it is dry. About like a 90 degree day in Chicago when the humdity is high.

Violent crime in Las Vegas is about half that of Chicago. Henderson maybe a quarter. If you are not petrified in Chicago you will have little trouble here.

Schools in Henderson are pretty good. About the same as the good suburbs of most US cities.

The only real problem in Las Vegas is employment. It is a tough job market. If the job is set it is a really good deal.

Good points. Why does everyone act like Las Vegas is the Devil's city? I can't search anywhere online without someone bashing it. :/ I think some people watch tv too much. The place we might live is a gated community so I doubt break ins would be a big problem.

If you move here without spending some time in Henderson, AWAY FROM THE FRIKKIN' CASINOS, you too might decide this is the devil's city and bash it every chance you get.

There are a few things I like about the Vegas Valley, and a LOT of things I don't like about it. I didn't have a choice moving here, so I'm making the best of it.

IF the job pans out, Vegas is a pleasant enough place to have money. But if the job DOESN'T pan out, this is a very bad place to be under or unemployed.

Pros - Cheap groceries, cheap rent/mortgage, cheap insurance, cheap taxes, great concerts, great restaurants, lots to do if you like the outdoors and can take the heat, cheap airfare to most of the world for when you want to get the hell out of here.

Cons - Aloof, paranoid, (perhaps even psychotic) neighbors; bad drivers; cheap stuff attracts cheap people; scam artists and con men abound; July and August is like living under a hair dryer; low pay scale; high unemployment; one of the worst housing markets in the US; libertarian mindset means nobody wants to see improvements

I've lived in Green Valley/Henderson for 5 years and it's a decent place to live. I rented an apartment at Camden Commons for a year and that was ok at best. Apartment renting is always a gamble, never know when you'll have noisy neighbors.

You're living in the wrong neighborhood.

(Unless of course, you're one of those neighbors....)

I dunno -- I live in 89110, near the top of the hill. My MIL lives in a neighborhood a mile away, also near the top of the hill. My aunt lives in 89138. None of these neighborhoods would be characterized as "low rent."

My aunt doesn't know any of her neighbors, my MIL knows most of hers but is only social with two (and has a long-standing feud with a neighbor who is running an illegal casino out of his house) and my neighbors (those that I ever SEE, at least) are either in the local Kool-Aid cult, mooches, or just plain whack jobs.

Suffice to say, Las Vegas is NOTHING like South Florida. In South Florida we had "eccentric" neighbors. Here, they're best described as "creepy." People certainly aren't friendly they way they were back home. There is also a definite lack of neighborhood backyard BBQs, block parties, and such.

As a native Miamian, all I can say is for that I am thankful.

Interesting comment considering that just last Sunday afternoon I went to a neighborhood pool party/cookout and that right now we are all in the midst of planning a block party.
