The military background explains it all. However, if you are using the concept that "it can be much worse," you're right, it can always be much worse. Much worse places or things doesn't always make things better though. Good luck, I hope what you are looking for, you find here. In my opinion, one of the few bright spots in the Las Vegas valley is Nellis Air Force. They contribute some great and interesting people to this somewhat of a community.

You want to influence our thinking toward the negative, and we'd like for you to see the positive. But that's really impossible to do when dealing with those who are always negative about everything. They think it's their duty to bring everyone down to the dark, miserable place where they live, and any attempt to get them to see things in a good light will fail.

buzz you missed my point I'm not just harping about the negative things in las Vegas . i just get upset when you and others insult and mock other people with opposing views . i understand las Vegas has some positives and negatives just like any other city but my recent posts have pointed out the negatives of living in this city. i don't understand why you and others put on blinders and act like this city is paradise and has no faults. just talking with longtime residents they have told me that the cost of housing has skyrocketed , crime is getting worse , schools are horrible , people are not civil to each other. having lived here for 2 years i can see all of what they are saying . that is why i moved back to Wisconsin. their is nothing wrong with criticizing this city its not perfect it has alot of of room for improvement. so go ahead and point out the all the great thing this city has to offer and me and other will point out the negatives . just be respectful of other peoples posts and understand that someone may have an opposing view. thank you for your understanding buzz.
The negatives that you point out such as rising crime, rising costs, schools, people not civil, etc., are symptoms of a disease that is nationwide. It isn't only in Las Vegas, it is in every big city and little town in America; maybe it's worldwide too. But you people make it sound like those things happen only in Las Vegas with the implication that Las Vegas is inherently a bad place because gambling is legal here. That idea is far from the truth. You also make it sound like it is worse here than anywhere else, and that we are all either a bunch of idiots or a bunch of criminals. We get tired of ignorant people who just don't know this town making their nasty remarks. Outside of Las Vegas there are millions of ignorant people who think we are all prostitutes and Mafia hit men. They even think we all live in hotel rooms. When asked when they will be coming to visit, people I've met all over the country make rude remarks about the place even though all they know about it is we allow gambling. That BS gets old, especially when most of us locals know how nice it really is here, but we're constantly put in the unfair position of defending our hometown. On the bright side, I also run into people all over the country who say they were either just here or they are getting ready to come, and they love Las Vegas.

I don't care if you talk about the things that need to be corrected as long as you can offer a solution, and you don't just sensationalize a few incidents in order to trash my hometown. I've mentioned plenty of issues throughout this site that we have in this town that I wish we could do something about. One is that as neighborhoods get older they don't become quaint and settled by old timers like they do elsewhere. They get taken over by people that many of us wouldn't want as neighbors. I suppose that could be a result of the unbridled growth which is something I also hate.

But keep in mind, if I started trashing Wisconsin I think you Wisconsin people would be as insulted as we are, or more so, since you haven't already been made defensive by years of ignorant comments. It's like in families where the members can speak harshly of old uncle Bill's bad habits, but if someone outside the family says anything they will all join in to kick your a**.

I don't know why you guys are so hard on the schools here. I grew up here and am a product of the wonderful Clark County school district, so I know firsthand that they are great. I for one loved that almost a third of my fellow classmates wouldn't be getting a diploma because this meant I was going to have a leg up on them when I applied for my first low-paying, service indusrty job. It was also great to go to school each day and see so many of my fellow classmates getting an early start on what is most important, a family. Another thing I love is the many neighborhood bars and casinos. Since it is too hot for parks, we get what really matters to a community, multiple bars. This way I know that I can drink and gamble really close to home, making the drunken drive home or to Walmart much easier to swallow. Having so many neighborhood casinos is the best part though. This way I can see a movie, eat a meal, and gamble part of my hard-earned pay check. If I lose track of time and spend a little too much, no worries because I know there are several nearby check cashing places where I can get a nice high interest loan. I agree with everyone else, if you don't like it here, or can't say something nice, then do us all a favor and leave. We almost have all of the best chains in the country, and I'm tired of hearing you guys rip this place apart. What if some chain like Dunkin' Donuts for example reads your posts and decides not to bring their wonderful donuts here because of all the negativity you spread? You want to eat Winchells for the rest of your life?
I assume this is all tongue-in-cheek but you'd probably be surprised at how little towns like the one I was raised in back east get really excited when a new fast food is built. Ask them about their favorite restaurant and they might tell you Burger Chef or Long John Silver's. Or ask if they like Mexican food and they say yes they go to Taco Bell all the time. Sometimes I haven't got the heart to tell them...

Buzz123, who are these "people" that people like you wouldn't want to live next to? Mexicans? Mexicans have been moving into the Las Vegas area and improving these old neighborhoods that no one cared about until now. It's irritating to see so many racist comments in here these days.

Well let's see. You live in the RNP with me and Buzz on the periphery. That is about 10 square miles from Tenaya/95 to 215 and Alexander to Tropical.

How many fast food restaurants? How many strip malls? How may bars?

How does the crime rate compare to similar cities? The schools?

That was cute...even though you were lying in your teeth.

Traffic numbers on I-79 have exploded in last decade and likely will
continue to grow

by Colleen Wright staff writer

CLARKSBURG — Since 1993, the number of cars and trucks traveling on Interstate 79 between Clarksburg and Morgantown has increased by around 8,500 cars a day.

In fact, the average number of cars exiting each day at the Meadowbrook Road exit was 38,000 in 1993 and 46,500 in 2006. That translates to more than 3 million more vehicles on the road in a given year.

The above is out of my hometown paper, a city that dropped from 32,000 while I was growing up to about 14,000 today since all the factories closed. It's funny how different areas see their problems. How many cars pass between the spaghetti bowl and Tropicana Ave. on I-15 everyday? Isn't it 300,000 or 400,000?

Where does all this stuff come from? Crime rates are not rising in the US or Las Vegas...over the period since 1990 they are down substantially...

See....

The Crime Mystery - TierneyLab - Science - New York Times Blog

Sure they may move up a bit one year...but the long term trend is clear.

Who says US schools are declining? Got a statistic for that? I think Vegas can make a pretty good claim things are improving rather quickly.

I couldn't agree more. I currently live in Cheyenne, Wy. To the south of us is a town called Greeley, Colorado, and this is a minority town. Alot of agriculture and the town thrives on these Hispanic people. The neighborhoods in this town are some of the most well kept and nicest I have seen. The people who inhabit these communities are some of the nicest people I have met too. Although many of them do not speak English well, they are always willing to help and to point you in the right direction, and they try. My fiance got a flat tire just north of Greeley on her way back from Denver and a truck full of Migrant farm workers stopped to help her. We both speak Spanish and have respect for people in general. I say, lose the xenophobic ideals and get to know these people, they truly are nice people for the most part. And no, they are not all illegals.

Listen a-hole. Don't put words in my mouth or make blanket accusations like that about me. I have posted my thoughts about Mexicans on here and they were all positive. I have absolutely no dislike toward Mexicans or any other Hispanics. In fact I have nothing but admiration for their guts, their determination, their hard work, their culture, their food, and especially their beautiful ladies. My granddaughter is Mexican, some of my nieces and nephews are Mexican, Honduran, and Guatemalan, and I have many very good friends from all over the Hispanic world. I lived on the border in a town that was 92% Hispanic, and I was even married in Mexico and have often considered moving there. I defend them, legals and illegals, Mexican-Americans and Mexican Nationals, every time I get another racist email from idiots who wouldn't know a Mexican if one bit him in the a**. I am scared to death about what the stupid government will do to screw them over, and at the same time destroy more of our liberties as well. Putting up a fence on the border to me is a bad as the Berlin Wall. And I agree with you on one thing, they do have pride of ownership and usually have the best looking homes in a neighborhood. Too bad the white folks in those neighborhoods don't do the same. So don't you dare accuse me of hating Mexicans when you don't even know me.

Well, olecapt, I know how you love stats, and I'm glad you asked. I wish you wouldn't think I was lying though. Let's take my favorite food, Mexican, for example. Within five miles of my incredibly safe abode there are at least (thank God) the following:
7 Taco Bell's, 3 Baja Fresh's, and 3 Dell Taco's. I wish there were more Dell Taco's. Let's hope that changes soon. Unfortunately my other favorite, German food, is not so easy to come by. I have to drive over 4 miles to get to the closest Wienerschnitzel. There's some more strip malls going up nearby, so I'm hoping a Wienerschnitzel goes in one or more. Oh, I almost forgot about this Panda Express kick that I've been on. Thankfully there is at least 5 within 5 miles of my house to feed my insatiable Panda Express appetite. Does Las Vegas mean "diverse" in Spanish? If not it should.
Since I cannot get enough of Walmart, I'm very proud to report that within 6 miles of my house is 6 (supercenters and grocery, but not enough if you ask me) Walmarts! To compete with the Walmarts is 7 Albertson's and 7 Smith's. Let's hope they stop building so many Albertson's and Smith's though. I think they are cutting into Walmarts profits and taking up land that could be used for more Walmarts. I wouldn't even know how to count strip malls, but if you are interested, look outside at just about any street corner for starters.

olecapt, please don't go around bragging that we all live near these wonderful things, I don't need a rush of people moving into this area and ruining these wonderful attractions.

I wish I knew how many school-age kids are getting an early start on family creation, compared to other cities, but I think it's great to see so many of our youth becoming so family oriented so early. It gives me hope for our future.
