Sorta like inner city drug/gang wars that are brewing. The biggest problem is the meth/drug trade and that has contributed to killings of rival drug dealers. The by product is sometimes, innocent people are killed in the cross fire. Another statistic that is not mentioned too often is violent crime commited from Domestic occurences. He told me this is the more dangerous for the police to call on. He says domestic disturbances are handled a little more carefully because it tends to get out of hand and someone is usually going to get hurt by getting stabbed or shot. Again, its usually a problem with meth/alcohol.

That is high quality journalism. The reporter doesn't know enough to use crimes reported per capita or per 100,000 of population. So the headline is "violent crime is up." Well no kidding because the population rose 100K in 12 months. But at least he does report that more Rape Crisis Centers being open this year means there just might be more rapes reported.
Dumb and dumber and dumberer around here.

Please don't move here!
There now aren't enough jobs to go around anymore, you'll soon only be able to buy a home from a bank due to so many local foreclosures, BANKRUPTCIES GALORE ( In Business Las Vegas),
the traffic is very bad and there's inadequate public transportation (incl. no EXPRESS BUSES!),
violent crime is UP,
southern Nevada congressmen DON'T HAVE THE JUICE to prevent Dept. of Energy's Yucca Mountain Nuclear Waste Dump from being built 90 miles northwest of the city,
and hard water wears out your clothes prematurely just from being laundered normally and fouls your home's plumbing in only a few years,
flash floods on the Strip ( Flickr Photo Download: Las Vegas flash flood, july 4, 1975) and ( Flickr Photo Download: Flood of July 1999 at Flamingo and the Strip Las Vegas, NV) and in residential streets (esp. cul-de-sacs) during the late summer "monsoon" season ( http://www.lasvegasheat.net/images/hotshots/flood-1.jpg) ( http://www.reviewjournal.com/lvrj_ho...tos/2flood.jpg),
nation's worst AUTO THEFT RATE ( Las Vegas leads nation in auto theft rate - Apr. 24, 2007),
IT'S WAY TOO HOT in the summers so you can't leave your child or pet in the car FOR A SECOND while you run in to buy a birthday card and your flip-flops melt and stick to the pavement and the CDs in your car melt to white-hot puddles and your car battery lasts only about 18 months max (not to mention the shortened life of auto tires),
inadequate PARKING on MT CHARLESTON recreation area ( SummitPost - Charleston Peak -- Climbing, Hiking & Mountaineering),
Nevada sports U.S.A.'s second highest suicide rate ( http://dhhs.nv.gov/DO_CD/Suicide%20i...%20Hearing.doc)
highest rate of women smokers in the U.S.A. ( reviewjournal.com -- News: Nevada tops U.S. in female smokers),
LV police wielding TASERS as LETHAL HEART ZAPPERS ( http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/n...1,959149.story),
plenty of OLD PEOPLE, HOMELESS people all over the place downtown, good luck finding a LAUNDROMAT in the city, everyone walks around with NOSEBLEEDS,
sex adverts and flyers are everywhere, Vegas is epicenter for prostitution and human sex trafficking ( Las Vegas Tops List For Prostitution & Human Trafficking and Dr. Melissa Farley's book Prostitution and Trafficking in Nevada: Making the Connections by Melissa Farley (Book) in Medicine & Science),
VIDEO POKER machines are everywhere even in gas stations and grocery stores ( They Call It Video Crack - TIME),
the mayor is a functional alcoholic ( http://www.joetheprogrammer.net/images/oscargoodman.jpg) (Las Vegas SUN: Goodman: 'I love to drink' (broken link)),
the School District can't figure out how to hire enough teachers,
there's practically no way to prevent a big, fat casino from being built in your neighborhood,
one of only two SNWA intake pipes (drawing from Lake Mead) is going to become exposed (rendered unusable) in a few years as Lake Mead continues to drop,
major roach problems in the suburbs, shoddy new home construction, sleazy swimming pool contractors,
there are runaway chlorine-filled railroad cars rolling out of control at 50 mph through downtown (Las Vegas SUN: Runaway chlorine train car rolls unattended through Las Vegas (broken link)),
a couple of Las Vegas City Councillors or Clark County Commissioners get sent to the slammer every year or two,
Nevada's senior U.S. senator is out of control with nepotistic business dealings ( NewsMax.com: Inside Cover Story), Nevada's new governor is a laughingstock ( Pahrump Valley Times - Nye County's Largest Newspaper Circulation),
the most significant historical building in southern Nevada is being totally neglected by the city of North Las Vegas ( Las Vegas City Life - Kiel ranch, historic dump),
SHALL I GO ON?

I'm gonna do my best impression of Olecapt in order to control this situation and put a good spin on this, because even though this appears to be bad news it isn't, Las Vegas is no different, violent crime is up everywhere. Come on Olecapt, help us out here. We need damage control, or I may never sell the house I bought three years ago for a 300k profit!
I do think that AAPoolService's spin on it is a good start. I'd like to propose that we only count crime that happened to innocent people. If you have a record and were the victim of a crime, it doesn't count in the stats. We're sure to see it decline then. We might even become the safest city in America. I could sell my home! Now, I'm getting excited. Will someone do something about this? Mayor, are you awake?

First off violent crime is still not a significant problem in Las Vegas. We remain in the middle...neither good nor bad.
Secondly though part of the data was very concerning. A very sharp runup in robbery and aggravated assault that appears specific to Las Vegas. I think any such result is very troubling. I would think we need causals and counter mechanisms and quickly. I am reasonably comfortable as long as Las Vegas behaves like a large southwestern city. As soon as it does anything unique I think we should all worry and a lot.
