Anyone know how hard or easy it is to get a job doing hotel/casino security right now? I would like to work for Cesaers Entertainment doing security on the Strip like at Flamingo, Imperial Palace, Harrahs, etc.... If I need to get experience working at an off strip local's casino first, I guess I will have to do that. Does anyone know how much the pay for uniformed security is as well and what the hiring process is? I have no interest in surveillance, and I don't gamble so I am not familiar with the games either. I'm interested in doing security because I want to someday get a law enforcement position, either with Metro, North Las Vegas Police, or Clark County School District Police, so if anyone could suggest anything about these departments or what hotels with good security to work for that would be great.

Why not go into the military as a MP and get some real experience?

Nobody who's actually worn a uniform has a lot of respect for a security guard. Not that we don't respect them because well actually we don't.

No offense intended. Security is not a very good stepping stone to Law Enforcement though.

Are you in college? Have you been to college? You'd be up against many war veterans who have criminal justice degrees I think. The wars are ending and the Army is downsizing. Metro is going to have a surplus of qualified candidates.

Don't let that stop you from obtaining your dreams though. I'd apply for corrections officer first.

Hope I don't sound like a negative nancy and good luck.

The only real jobs on Craigslist are probably the security jobs. Check them out.

las vegas security jobs classifieds - craigslist

Joining the military is a good option also.

Yea I do have my college degree. Why would you think security is not a good stepping stone into law enforcement. I am aware that these next few years thee will be many veterans going into all public safety sector jobs. I will be competing with them so I am hoping that security experience is going to be what gives me that "work experience." I also search Craigslist routinely.

If by uniform you mean underwear, then yeah.

I feel that a security job is a decent stepping stone but not the best.

Using myself as an example.

If I were to get out of the Air Force right now. I would have 12 years of service with the same amount of years of secret security clearance, 5 deployments to Iraq/Afghanistan, 7 years of armed security positions with 6 different weapon systems, training and experience in disarming potential terrorist, anti-terrorism training, an unrelated degree, protected millions of dollars in military equipment, a bunch of other military related stuff that I can throw on a resume/application for a job.

Now multiply all of that above by about 100,000 other military members that will be getting out soon. Probably half of them have ten times more security related skills than myself.

I'm not looking for a security job by the way. I just have 4 family members that work security/surveillance in some of the most popular clubs and casinos on the strip so I am in the know. Applications and resumes are starting to pour in.

I don't think it's a bad thing to have. Don't get me wrong.

Private security is not held in high esteem by police officers and agencies. I'm sorry, it's just the truth. For a multitude of reasons. I don't think it would hurt or anything, but security is not a path to becoming a LEO.

They are looking for dependable work history. Even moving a lot reflects poorly on your resume.

I think I'd look into corrections officer and dispatcher with metro at the moment. Both great stepping stones.

Doing volunteer work in the community would be nice I'd think.

You could also make a crime fighting costume and actually go out and fight street crime. I'm sure the agency would appreciate that sort of initiative.

Looky here. Go to the Metro site They have a few jobs listed

You can do an internship or even volunteer with them.

https://lvmpd.peopleadmin.com/postings/800

Or apply for corrections officer. I think volunteering will give you some insight and even allow you to meet some of the good people with metro so that you can ask them all these great questions you have.

If you're still in school do the internship

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (http://www.lvmpd.com/employment/internship_program.html - broken link)

Good luck!

Obama has also put out an new plan to hire veterans as the nation's first responders. So I'm sure the resumes are pouring in but I can't let that discourage me from trying to get into law enforcement and doing what I need to do to look attractive. I'm hoping and expecting that in a few years there will be anothers mass hiring of police officers. Thats what some are saying here in CA but its still too expensive to live here. The last big hiring of officers in Ca was in the early 2000s. Now alot of the baby boomers are retiring so I'm hoping it will be my chance. I'm not from Las Vegas, but was there a large hiring boom, say in the 1990s and early 2000s, when the valley began to experience rapid growth? Also does your family memebers like doing security in the clubs and casinos and do they actually get valuable work experience?

Why is this? I been trying to figure this one out for a while but it seems to be more on an individual basis. Don't get me wrong, I know some guards act stupid and contact the cops for the most rediculous things but others are very professional and have a good working relationship. Usually if the head of security is an ex cop from the local department, the working relationships are better. I would think that in Las Vegas, espeically in the casinos, that security and local police have to work closely together in order to keep the public safe. Usually hotel security are the first responders to any crime or medical in progress so clear communication is needed. I would think cops, at least in the casinos, would think highly of their security departments.

One of them loves it. Probably because he has been doing it for a while(over 14 years). The other complains about the hours and cant wait to jump ship first chance he gets. I also have an in-law that bounces around from popular club to popular club as a bouncer. His latest track record is Lavo, Tao, Marquee, and I think now Haze.

out of curiosity, is there any security jobs for retired out of state cops? I remember years ago alot of retired nypd moved there got bored and picked up work, some went on to second law enforcement career. I have law enforcement background and actually spent time in a CCTV unit, monitoring the housing projects.
