I guess I'm priced out of the market then.

Just to throw my two cents in, I tried the $20 trick last year when we stayed a night at Mandalay Bay.

We stayed in early November and we got a great rate on a spa suite, so I figured they might have been running a little empty. We we also stayed just a single night (Friday) so I figured that would help our chances of being upgraded.

When I asked her for the upgrade she said she could move us to a higher floor with a better view and she would waive the resort fee since we're locals. I don't know if she would have waived the resort fee anyways.

The room we got was really nice, on a high floor, and did have a nice view, but we didn't get the double door 2000sf suite either. So I don't know if it really helped, but she took the money and didn't make any kind of big deal about it.

I'm of the mind the $20 didn't help. I routinely get upgrades by asking nicely.

Also, I'm not giving a desk clerk or restaurant hostess two sawbucks just to do their job. Nobody ever offers to tip ME for cooking their food really well -- but I do it right regardless because I give a damn about what I do. And seeing as I'm the guy who selects the steak you'll be eating, it would totally be a great idea to offer me a fiver to make sure you got one of the dozen or so ribeyes that have really good marbling. (Currently, they go to the people who order their steak rare. If I have a lot of good looking meat, I'll give some love to the medium-rare people, too.)

I had booked a suite at Mandalay Bay but it was one of the entry level ones (on a low floor with a view of the back parking lot). I gave the desk clerk a 20 when I checked in and asked her to please see if there was something she could do. As I started to unpack in the room the phone rang - it was the same desk clerk. She said one of the suites in The Hotel they reserve for comping high rollers was available and I could have it (no additional charge). It was an incredible experience - just like in the movies. The HUGE suite was up high, had a view right down the strip, and had floor to ceiling windows, plasma TVs in the bathrooms, a jacuzzi - the whole nine. And, the staff delivered canapes/hors d'oeuvres to my door each night - without even asking if I wanted them. The desk clerk said I may only get to stay there for a day or two, but I ended up staying for a week. I gave her another 20 before I left.

So - maybe the 20 dollar trick is bogus, maybe not. Or, perhaps it depends on the customer and the desk clerk involved. All I can report is I tried it and it worked. I have not tried it again (now that I have a place of my own on the Strip there's no need).

Bill
Let me get this straight.. You had enough money for even a low end SUITE and you gave the girl a twenty to upgrade..She got you a HUGE Strip view Suite for High Rollers for a week... and you gave her another twenty??? Kind of cheap if you ask me.. Should have given her at least a Hundred.......
