I live in Texas and property taxes here are around 2.5-3% of appraised value but we have no income tax...so how can las vegas have around 1% property tax with no income tax??? do schools not get funded in vegas? sure vegas has tourism and gambling but aren't those industries in the dumps? Texas has the oil industry and that should negate vegas' gambling/tourism industry.

Schools? What are those? You mean those state run daycare facilities that are mandated by law?

Because we have a lot of generous, giving, compassionate people living here, lots of big tippers.

Many Las Vegans, say for instance their property tax bill is $700, will round it off to $1000 or $2000. And if their bill for their license plates is $200, they'll throw in another $300 or $500. The same with moving violations: your speeding ticket is $200, with a smile, they'll hand over another $500! Think of the multiplier effect!

And that's not even counting the generous charitable contributions that are made by the generous souls of this city. We don't have soup kitchens in Las Vegas for the homeless, they're nothing more than free porterhouse steak houses, with Alaska Flambe for dessert!

Our roads and highways are also funded by generous contributions!

There's something definitely wrong, deep in the heart of Texas!

Also remember in vegas we have 'drive by cashings' were some anonymous person will drive by a school and throw large amounts of cash, and poker chips at waiting faculty and students, I heard recently there was a incident where iPads, and Laptops were tossed into a waiting crowd.

I hope nobody was hurt

Jonathan

Property and income taxes are subsidized by gaming and tourism, like you suggested. That hasn't worked out so well as population had increased at a much higher rate than gaming revenue, plus of course the recession. It's still a decent chunk of change though.

That said, our schools aren't funded remotely as well as yours in TX. I have a friend who is a teacher in Houston and their pay dwarfs most of the rest of the county, including here.

Nobody moves to Vegas because of great schools, but there are good schools here too, just fewer of them.

It is customary throughout the SW with the exception of CA to underfund schools. It works OK in Utah but not well in the rest of the SW.

Note that Houston has a very large school system and it strongly resembles CCSD.

Gambling and tourism pay for a lot of the expense and may well pay more. It is only a matter of time before some group launches an initiative to increase the education funding.
