I guess the two Winter months or the two weeks of Spring are good for walking to shops.
I walk in the afternoons/evenings from late September to late April. So it's a little more than 2 weeks of walking. And i especially love it in the winter with a biting north wind blowing, when nobody is out. Trails all to myself.

Boca and Smoke Ranch are much better than Hunt Ridge.
Huntridge is one word.

My point wasn't that the shopping was better, just that it was more conveniently located to homes, because this part of the city is designed a little differently, before everyone was expected to drive to do their shopping. Besides, you won't find a 99 cents only store in Boca Park!

And actually I root for you guys...but the problem remains..One can walk in Huntridge and Parks...but there is no where to walk too.

Maybe I have it wrong...is there a full sized, full service Super Market within walking distance of Huntridge?

Generally speaking, nobody in this city walks to do their shopping unless they have no car. Especially this time of year.
I will have a car but I'd like to walk to a coffee shop or library or something. I have heard that Summerlin has areas where you can wa
lk to Starbucks, Einstein's bagels, the public library, etc. I'd just like to be get out of the house and do things without HAVING to get in the car. However, we can't afford to buy in Summerlin.

The only part of Vegas I've found walkable is the strip. Also consider that the weather is a factor much of the year. Toward the end of my tenure in Vegas, I moved to the Desert Club on Koval and it was heaven. I was right behind the Venetian where I worked (which I drove most of the time due to weather). Eliminating my horrific commute and getting a huge apartment for cheap was quite satisfying. I was never the victim of any crimes and it was actually really quiet there. My unit was built like a bank vault too. The pool was sublime. My taste isn't popular, most people will tell you to live very far from the strip but I like walkable places too so that was a contributing factor. Groceries required a drive no matter what the temperature.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk to Sahara/Maryland from my house. There is a Smiths, an Albertson's, and a Starbucks. When the weather is cooler, I do that walk every weekend with my family. I agree that Charleston could use a few nicer establishments, but that kind of thing comes with time. For now, I'll take what I can get. I still think it's better than living in a construction zone in the middle of the desert until it gets built out.

Jane - you can certainly find a great suburban community close to a grocery store and a cafe - it will just take a little looking around. Many of the newer tracts extend for miles before there is a commercial area. I like the area west of Buffalo between Washington and Lake Mead. There are some nice communities there and the shopping on Buffalo is great, including Trader Joe's, Lowe's, K-Mart and Albertson's near Washington and near Lake Mead there is a Wild Oats, Von's, a big park and a public library. I believe this is technically Summerlin, but I could be wrong.

Desert Club got good reviews earlier. However since it was bought by Harrah's to be torn down it does not. In general places in that "going out of business" mode don't work very well.

Thanks for the encouragement. I too have a family and being able to get out for a walk with the them is very important to me. I'd also love to be close to Trader Joe's!

Score one for Chest. That is probably the best walking spot available in the price range. The Buena Vista Town Houses are in Summerlin...have a pool and little club house...and are on one of the major walking trails...as well as being a short walk from virtually any neighborhood shopping.

Odd I missed this one. That is the Von's we use...and our Wild Oats.
