My point wasn't that the shopping was better, just that it was more conveniently located to homes, because this part of the city is designed a little differently, before everyone was expected to drive to do their shopping. Besides, you won't find a 99 cents only store in Boca Park! |

Maybe I have it wrong...is there a full sized, full service Super Market within walking distance of Huntridge? |

The only part of Vegas I've found walkable is the strip. Also consider that the weather is a factor much of the year. Toward the end of my tenure in Vegas, I moved to the Desert Club on Koval and it was heaven. I was right behind the Venetian where I worked (which I drove most of the time due to weather). Eliminating my horrific commute and getting a huge apartment for cheap was quite satisfying. I was never the victim of any crimes and it was actually really quiet there. My unit was built like a bank vault too. The pool was sublime. My taste isn't popular, most people will tell you to live very far from the strip but I like walkable places too so that was a contributing factor. Groceries required a drive no matter what the temperature.

It takes about 20 minutes to walk to Sahara/Maryland from my house. There is a Smiths, an Albertson's, and a Starbucks. When the weather is cooler, I do that walk every weekend with my family. I agree that Charleston could use a few nicer establishments, but that kind of thing comes with time. For now, I'll take what I can get. I still think it's better than living in a construction zone in the middle of the desert until it gets built out.
Jane - you can certainly find a great suburban community close to a grocery store and a cafe - it will just take a little looking around. Many of the newer tracts extend for miles before there is a commercial area. I like the area west of Buffalo between Washington and Lake Mead. There are some nice communities there and the shopping on Buffalo is great, including Trader Joe's, Lowe's, K-Mart and Albertson's near Washington and near Lake Mead there is a Wild Oats, Von's, a big park and a public library. I believe this is technically Summerlin, but I could be wrong. |
