Vegas? I would like to find a good Chinese restaurant in America that isnt a buffet serving reheated sesame chicken, mongolian beef, and sweet and sour with barely any chicken in it. Dont get me started on the ones that have french fries, pizza, jello, and supermarket birthday cake.

I know there are good quality Chinese joints in Vegas and in the rest of America, but 95% of them are as above. If there is a restaurant where you can order a Chinese dish off of a menu a la carte and have a Chinese dude sizzling it up in the back in Vegas Im all ears. Difficulty: Not on the Strip. Added difficulty: Not PF Changs of Pei Wei.

Have you ever been to Chinatown on Spring Mountain?

I have rolled through a number of times, but have never stopped at any of the eateries. As with most Chinatowns, there will be some great hidden gems, but mostly a lot of run of the mill stuff that I can get in a Des Moines suburb, not to mention quite a few that would make the hardiest health inspector puke. Like I stated above, Im all ears.

In most places you can order off the menu but most people don't do it becasue they may not know what the real food is.

My in laws are from China. There ARE some good spots around Spring Mountain. But keep in mind that the better the Chinese restaurant, the less it's going to taste like westernized Chinese food. The only similarity between Chinese food and American Chinese food is the rice.

If you're looking for a mix of real Chinese and westernized standards, Ping Pang Pong at Gold Coast is actually a pretty-good bet.

I've been to several sit-downs in Chinatown. A few are pretty good. But I can't think of any names off the top of my head. Basically, you're looking for any place that has live fish for sale in glass tanks prominently displayed in the dining area. EDIT -- These sort of places are also usually a family affair. Mom and dad cooking, an uncle doing dishes, and younger children (who always speak better English) serving food. Look for a menu written in Chinese, with badly-translated English below. Often, there's only one or two "round eye" menus in the entire restaurant. THAT is where the good food is found.
