Sometimes I go outside with her but outside playing with mom (although it's a blast) isn't the same as playing hide and seek or tag with a bunch of kids her own age. When I was younger (uugghhh I can't believe I'm using that phrase) we stayed outside all night having sooo much fun. Kids don't do that anymore or is it just here? Are there any areas/neighborhoods with a lot of children playing outside? I understand it's really hot some months in Vegas but I'm talking about when it cools down or is bearable outside.
Where would they go?

Thanks so much people for all the advice. Does anyone know a good place for what I want in the Southwest side of town? My daughter is into dance and singing and other activities so I fully intend to try to get her into those activities too. I guess I'm going to just put my event planning skills into high gear because I'm going to become the playdate queen!!! ha ha ha

Oddly enough I actually really didn't mind the negative comments this time around. They make me more determined. lol I wonder those with the negative comments... do you have children?

movingon2...I must give you credit here as you've really been posting quite a bit with you daughter's concerns in mind. I know I was a little hard on you at first, but I am glad you're doing the research. Here's a site that shows the transiency rates for the Clark County School District. Since the district is so large, the list can be broken down by region (by clicking the dropdown box). Some schools can have a rather high rate, so for your daughter's social development, you may want to pick one with a lower rate. The state shows a transiency rate of 33.2%; the district at 35.7%. It also has links for graduation rates and dropout rates.

jfkIII: Thanks I will look into it. I know that to some Las Vegas is the worst place to raise a family. However I honestly believe it's all about parenting. Your child can go to the best school or live in a city rated in the top places to live and still fail, join a gang, or do drugs if your not involved. On the other hand your child can go to a school rated at the bottom and excel. It's all about parent involvement in your childs life (in my opinion). Some people want to raise their child in a bubble and keep them away from everything that is reality. Don't get me wrong I don't plan to move to Vegas and take my daughter to see Thunder down under ha ha ha but we will discuss real world issues open and honestly.

That is the attitude that makes you a great parent. It is the parents who want to pay someone else to parent their child or just have children so they can check that off on their list that have the issues. We live in Aliante and their are lots of kids around here. Aliante has wonderful walking trails that allow the kids to walk to parks and the library without coming anywhere near the road. I am not that familiar with the southwest part of town but I am sure there are family oriented communities there as well. Another great thing about living here is that when it does cool down enough to go out at 9:00 pm there are no bugs bothering you and the street lights make the parks very bright. My kids usually practice soccer in the dark at Desert Breeze park and it is really kind of neat. I moved from Michigan and when it got dark there everyone went in to the house or covered themselves with mosquito spray.

Movingontovegas--I also believe what your saying --We are going to be moving out very soon. Its about the parenting! Parents really need to be around more. I have a 2 and 4 yr old and have read all the negative posts. I can not wait to find out on my own about Vegas for kids.. Great post thanks

I see kids playing outside later in the evening, but not during the day - too hot.

There are always summer camps though, as well as the option of doing indoor activities with friends.
