Any of the conventional water softeners kill plants...so you don't use them for the external watering. Virtually every house built in the last twenty years has a loop in the garage that lets you process only the house water.
So normally none should get to your swimming pool... Unless it is indoors...and then you obviously have sufficient funds to get the pool its own RO system. .

ONE: Don't listen here in Vegas we don't drink the water, only the adult beverage....LOL
No really, Vegas water needs to be filtered. What ever you use, at lest drink, and give your 4 legged friends filtered water. Water softner is nice, but we only filter our 4 legged, and drinking, cooking water and are getting along ok.

Another +1 on the softener. We've rented two houses out here. The first had a filter/softener, and the second doesn't. The differences are dramatic - the dishwasher works much better with it, clothes are much cleaner/softer, and you feel cleaner after a shower. If we owned the house we're in now, I wouldn't hesitate one second to buy/install one.

Don't know if WHOR responded to you privately or not, but you can buy a R/O System for your drinking and tap water at Lowes (I went to the one up on Ft. Apache and Tropicana). It cost maybe 200-300$ and was pretty easy to install, although I had someome else install it, just to make sure it was done right. The white film on your dishes WILL clear up as soon as you install the water softener, although an additive like JetDry helps as well!
My recommendation is to just get it for the drinking/tap water (most newer homes have a loop that you can hook it up just to basically your whole kitchen area). If you are having problems with the washing machine, use a fabric softner like Borax or something in the wash (it does work, believe me!).
Other than that... you just get used to using a lot of moisterizer. Oh yeah, and drinking a LOT of water helps.

Yeah, I was thinking Home Depot or Lowes for a water system, didnt know any good places for one. Ive been in Vegas for 15 yrs. this is the first time Ive had a problem with washing dishes. Ive lived in apartments before (this is the first time in a house) I never had any problems in the apartments, I find it hard to believe that they would have some kind of water softener there, I dont notice a difference as far as the shower goes. Man, I do hope getting a water softener makes the difference, I thought I was going crazy with these dishwashers, and using Jetdry didnt make any difference either. Thanx for the help!
