Hard Water
Does Vegas have Hard water? I have seen that some houses have water softners?

It is not hard water like what we have in Michigan (everything doesn't turn orange) but some areas have what I think is called limescale deposits. We did not have a softener in Summerlin, didn't need it. Here in Aliante we do have one because we have a little more of the film and the lime like build up.

Lime build up? But not red-orange! What is the lime buildup like? Aliante is the area we planning on moving very soon..so any of your posts will help!

i believe the lime deposits are whitish (calcium carbinate) and the reddish-ornage crap you get up there in MI is due to iron (lots of it in the bedrock up that way)

Seriously it is nothing to worry about. It is just a film type thing (sorry, not a technical description) that mostly gets on the shower doors and around the faucets. It is easy to clean, nothing like the lovely rust of Michigan. Also, I have noticed that the salt out here seems to last a lot longer.

Hard Water
Water is considered "hard" when it contains a high level of dissolved minerals. In the Las Vegas Valley, the two nontoxic minerals that cause our hard water are calcium and magnesium. They're carried into Lake Mead from the mineral-dense Colorado River and do not pose a health risk.
The hardness of Las Vegas Valley Water District water is about 275 parts per million (ppm) or 16 grains per gallon, categorized as "very hard."

Is it drinking water? Are dishes will just have a film on them? Ya that is nothing like what we have here in michigan! Its very gross and hard to get clean!

I recommend a softener. We use Potassium. And we use RO for the drinking cooking water. We water the animals with 25%tap and 75% RO or so.
The issue on softening is primarily bathing and washing clothes.
We are on a well so our composition is a little different...Ten thousand year old water tends to have picked up minerals. We also get some sand.
But well water is about as hard as Colorado water. |
