I stopped doing my own oil changes because getting rid of the old oil is a pain in the arse. Unless your the type to pour used oil and coolant down the storm drain. I just buy the oil I use (Mobil 1 or Royal Purple) plus a good filter like K&N or Mobil 1 or Wix. Then I take it to a local shop that charges me $10 for labor. I dont get dirty and they get rid of the used oil the easy way.
+1 on stealerships. The only thing I buy there is electrical parts like Starters, Alternator, ECU,PCM..etc.. I guess your kinda stuck if you have any kind of warranty repair. The key is to find a good knowledgable service advisor. Somone who is not going to UPSELL you any of the crap they make high profits on. Just my 2Cents. |

Very true!! You'd be suprised how many people follow a good advisor to another dealership that is completely out of their way just to get the same customer service from them. |

negative on that. i dont pour used oil (or anything toxic) down the storm drain. thats not right. what i do with used oil is when im done, i go to the local autozone or other auto supply store, and give them the oil. they charge you a small fee and they take it.

When I used to change my own oil, I'd stick it by the front door of Pep Boys early in the morning before they opened or I'd pour it into the grease dumpster behind McDonald's.
One day, after one too many busted knuckles I vowed never to work on another car if I didn't have to. |

I know.. i hope people dont do that! I was making a point that its not really cost effective to change your own oil anymore and get dirty and the hastle of getting rid of the used oil.

I'm not sure if this is near where the original poster asked for or not, but I've had one car experience here and while it was awful and terrifying, I couldn't have asked for better management than the people who own the Meinke on Rainbow and (i think) Flamingo...
Basically what happened was my 1998 Honda Prelude blew a hose to the radiator while I was sitting in line at the Carl Jr's on the same block as afor mentioned repair shop. Oh, I remember the day so well. I was on my way back from placing a $10 parlay on some college football at the Orleans (I know, the backstory isn't important, but all the same...), and I thought I might grab some burgers for my kid and husband on the way back. Boom went the hose and out came the smoke from under the hood. Engine didn't quit but I knew I was screwed. Besides, this is the only car we have in the family (cost too much to bring both out here, so we went with the car with the best gas mileage to keep). I panicked and reversed out of line (thank god no cars were behind me) into a parking lot. I walked across the lot to the Meinke shop and told them my sad sob story. So we lifted the hood and it was apparent it was a blown hose. Nice dude told me they could fix it, so we pushed my car over to the shop so we wouldn't screw up the engine anymore than it already was by cranking it. One problem though. I only had $20 in cash...no credit or debit cards (I choose not to take them into casinos so I don't get sucked into the temptation...besides, it was just a freaking $10 bet...le sigh). My husband was still asleep and not answering his phone so I couldn't get the debit card number to give them to repair the car, so the wonderful wife of the owner actually drove me to my house (maybe about 5-7 miles away) to get some money to pay for the repairs. Not only that, but she offered me lunch too. She said had just gotten tons of Chinese take out for her crew (owners pay for their employees lunches on Saturdays) and she gave me some. The replacement cost for the hose and labor was about $100. Probably reasonable around here. They were the nicest people and really helped me. Anytime I ever need any kind of tune-up, oil change (which incidentally I do now), I'm going to them...and y'all should too. Nice genuine folks...and oh yeah, they immigrated here from the Netherlands...cool couple! |

Sinkbean, that was very nice of them at that shop. Usually a radiator hose is about $20 bucks (my corvette had a $60 upper hose). Then they charged you $70 for the labor and $10 for coolant. Thats not a bad deal. Did they check the other hoses? this could save you a headache later by changing those out also + your belts.

I can agree with u on that! I'm from LA, CA and I'm going up there for Thanksgiving weekend to get my car fixed there. Acura CL Type S. They are reliable and very proud of their service. Being a female they have not yet once tried to rip me off. I've done price quotes before going there and they have not yet once surprised me.
