How old must I be in order to join the Las Vegas Culinary Union? I'm currently 20 years of age, but will be turning 21 in September.

Thanks,
-Mike

PS- I browsed the LV Culinary Union website and was not able to find an answer to my question (hence why I'm asking it here).
PSS- I intended to say "Culinary Union 226" rather than "Culinary Unions 221" in the title of this thread.

Are you employed yet in a culinary position?

No, I am not currently employed in any culinary job. I just moved to Vegas about a month ago and I plan on getting a job with the culinary union if possible. I was thinking of starting out as a dishwasher and working my way up to a cook.

But back to my original question.....Is the minimum age requirement to join the LV Culinary Union 18 or 21 years of age?

I can't imagine any reason they would or could legally require anyone to be older than 18 other than to serve liquor.

Not 100% sure, so I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I THINK you only have to be old enough to legally work in Nevada. So as I recall that's either 15 or 16 with parents consent. Anyway, I am sure you are old enough at age 20.

The other thing is, when I was forced to join (it's supposed to be a right to work state, but in reality it isn't), you didn't join until you got a union job. The employer, at least this is the way it has been, would then send you over to join the union. Probably a little different system now, but I still don't think you'd join without having a job first.

All you have to do is go to the union hall, or call them, and ask. If you plan to get on a call list for banquets there have to be rules for how to qualify, starting on the 'C' list and working up. At your age it would be a good thing to do now, since you have many years to work up to the "A" list.

Culinary also has a school for teaching different aspects of restaurant work from busing to cooking. Not a bad place to go for lunch either.

You need to be eighteen and pay one month union dues in advance and have the proper ID.

I think you might be hoping that you'll have a better chance of being hired if you already belong to 226. I don't think that is the case though. With some trade unions it might be, but I'm pretty sure you don't need to waste money on dues until you are actually hired in a union job.

Getting into the union without a job is a good thing since the union hall dispatcher sends you out with job referrals. Union dues are only $50 a month. Also NV is a right to work state. You are entitled to the bargaining agreement benefits without having to join the union.

How much seniority do you have to have to get on the call list? Do all new members start on the "C" list, and what are their real chances of being called? How long would it take a new member to make the "A" list? Are "A" list people the ones with full time jobs, or are they the ones that are on call and get first choice of jobs? My understanding is that they call the "A" list first, then "B", then if they still need people they call "C", and "C" seldom ever gets called.

Is that right or have I been misled?

If you don't have a job, and you don't stand a chance of getting called in, is it worth $50 a month, and a lot of time waiting for a call? What if you pay $50 a month dues but never get to work? Do you still get the Culinary insurance?

Inquiring minds are confused.

Seniority only applies to your time at the house you work at under culinary contract agreement. A union referral is just that. The hotel is not obligated to hire the union referrals sent out by the union hall. But it does get you a step in the right direction. You only collect culinary insurance when you have worked enough hours to qualify. The insurance contributions are paid by the hotel. Not the union. A lot of the construction trade unions base your seniority on you length of time in the union. This is where you probably getting the concept from.
