Hi All,

Thanks for taking time to read and respond. I'm moving from Los Angeles to Vegas in a month for work, and since I know nothing about the city, I'm trying to find a good place to live.

I'm currently torn between Summerlin (where I'll work) and UNLV-area (where there are people my age along with bars and etc).

I have a fairly wide price range, but would love to find something under $700/mo for my own room. If you have any recommendations for a younger apartment complex/condo community/etc in either Summerlin or UNLV that would be great. Other neighborhoods are cool too, but I'd prefer to be close to either work or other folks my age.

If there are good websites to search for vegas apartments/roommates I'd love to hear about them.

Thanks again for your suggestions.

Can you elaborate? I've heard that there's quite a bit of crime around UNLV, but how bad is it? Summerlin is very nice but it seems like an extremely "family" kind of place--I'm looking for an area where there are lots of people in their 20s because I know literally no-one in the city.

Use Craigslist for your house/apartment/roommate search. Me, I wouldn't be someone's roommate in Las Vegas for all the tea in China. Too many skeevy thieves, and you won't know if you're a really good judge of character until it's too late.

As for meeting people, work will likely be your best bet. Las Vegans keep to themselves. Reclusive is more like it. (At least that's been my experience. But I don't do video poker bars. So that removes 90% of my socializing options.) Most of my friends are friends from work. But it's certainly not like my hometown, where I knew absolutely everyone -- from the eccentric billionaire artist down the street, to the bum who lived two doors down in a neighbor's shed.

I think you should rent a month in one of the short-term-stay places that abound in this city. That'll be about $800 a month, and you can dedicate yourself to finding "your place" in Las Vegas that way.

I don't like Summerlin very much. I don't go there often, but when I do, the whole area just annoys me. I don't know why. I just don't get a good vibe from the area. I much prefer Green Valley. And I live in Sunrise, which is basically "Little Mexico." But I'm cool with that.

And add me to the list of people who think the area around UNLV is one of the worst neighborhoods in Las Vegas. I never, ever go there.

Also, most locals hate the term "Vegas" or "Lost Wages." Kind of like how frat boys don't like it when you call it a fraternity a "frat." Or how San Franciscans hate the term "Frisco."

Me, I don't care. I don't find it demeaning to call the town "Vegas." After all, there's a Vegas Valley road. Nobody is storming the city planner's office with pitchforks and torches to get that changed to Las Vegas Valley road.

Whenever you search the "where should I live" threads you will always get Summerlin, Henderson, and sometimes another area thrown in. Summerlin is totally overrated. Nice houses and area, but its mostly for people who can say they live in Summerlin when asked. Some people subconsciously live there because it's 99% white and there will be no scary brown people there so it must be "safe". There is something pretentious about it that I dont like.
If youre going to work there it might make sense to live there though it is a bit pricey. Its isolated location makes a bit of an awkward commute to other parts of the valley depending on where you live.

LOL...That's a running joke for a co-worker of mine that lives out that way. He is late to work quite often. Always blames it on traffic. Yet he refuses to move closer to the base. He claims its worth it to live in the area for "piece of mind".
