Looks like the RTC is fast tracking the light rail set up to run from McCarran to Downtown along Maryland Parkway.

Making tracks: Light-rail proposal for Maryland Parkway is moving forward - Thursday, March 17, 2016 | 2 a.m. - Las Vegas Sun Mobile

This is very simple -- draw a five-line-per-axis tic-tac-toe board over the Las Vegas Valley. Five east-west. (I suggest Craig, Lake Mead, Charleston, Sunset and Silverado Ranch [with some construction to link it to Gomer].) Five north-south. (Nellis, Maryland*, the Monorail, Decatur, Durango.) That's our light rail system. Time the traffic lights to the rail system so that even those who aren't ON a train can look forward to steady travel if they're alongside a train.

After that is accomplished, the current bus system's ONLY job is to get passengers to and from the light-rail stations.

*The big problem with Maryland is that it would require another tunnel (or a spur to the existing tunnel) to link it up with Henderson. I'd go with Paradise instead of Maryland if I were planning this. Paradise is already a hot mess to drive as it is. Putting light rail there wouldn't ruin that street any more than it already is. This is why D.I. isn't one of my east-west streets. No point mucking up the best E-W travel street in the Valley -- send it down Charleston instead. That street is another hot mess.

Why are we not hearing the whining about paying for this like we used to? How the car is king and if you don't like it go back to where you came from.....Has the mindset of this valley really changed that much, that quickly? I am delighted but find it a little hard to believe.

Don't worry, they haven't announced how they will pay for it yet. The troglodytes will have their day. They always do.

The bus system is good as it is. They need armed guards at the farebox to make sure people pay. Revenues would go up 35-40%.

Keep the buses, put in dedicated bus lanes and a traffic signal preemption system. Save millions.

We already did that. There are two million people plus 100k visitors in the valley at any given time. Have you driven here lately? I'm in Southern California for business right now and I can tell you that navigating city streets and freeways here is much easier than what I am used to at home.

To my surprise, I've driven to work without using expletives four out of five times this trip.

In Omaha they built a bridge over an existing, very busy road (Dodge). When driving to/from downtown to the west commuters hop on the bridge and bypass lights and stop/go traffic.

A view from 115th looking north.

I wonder if something like this would work for sections of Las Vegas.

I find the dumbest decision made by "engineers" here is stop light timing. I've played around with speed on a couple of major streets and find going 55-60 on a 45 mph road lets me make the lights.

And I surmise that this is part of the problem with so many speeders here. They've figured that out, too.

I've said it before and I'll say it again; I swear the people who design these systems either don't drive, or never drive the streets they make decisions about.

Or copy Chicago. During morning rush hour there are lanes that have red lights for lanes going away from downtown, and green lights going towards downtown.

So 3/4 lanes heading into town in the morning with 2 lanes heading out. The reverse in the evening. It really moves traffic much faster.
