And for college students, most will just buy cheap (Walmart, Target will do) or used furniture (Craigslist) anyway.

I'm quite surprised that IKEA is after the high education/high income earning families. As mentioned their furniture is low end in quality which is not what one would expect high earners/educated professionals would be looking for.

With the fairly high rate of resident turnover, many style conscious people moving from areas like LA but many without the money for real, quality furniture and a city with many residents who follow the latest and greatest in trends you would expect Vegas to be exactly where a store like IKEA would want to be.

just curios....how are ikea wages? i've been thru one or two ikea's in my lifetime (bought 1 item in the food court). can't say that i WANT one here, but given the fact majority of their items are cheaply made one would assume they pay their employees something equivalent to walmart???

Sales Associate wages start at approx $8.71 and can go up to $15.00 after time and performance. There manufacturing plant in Danville, Va., only pays it's workers near minimum wage (compared to Sweden, where they receive $19.00 hr.) In Sweden it is very different. They are governed by laws requiring much higher rates (upwards of $20 hr for sales assoc as well). There are several articles about it, if you Google it. They claim the discrepancy in pay is because Sweden has a higher standard of living than the US and requires higher pay rates.

Ikea workers: Higher pay in Sweden, Lower pay in United States

Well, they are certainly right about that, at least.

One wonders when they'll start exporting from here to Sweden (or if they have already.)

No. The low-end products like IKEA stuff are all or mostly from China.
