Has it ever been considered? It has been argued about for over 30 years or so. There are some casinos that have no smoking areas, and there are even a few casinos in Nevada that do not allow smoking at all. I seriously doubt that the no smoking laws effect business one iota, but they argue that customers who drink and gamble have all kinds of other bad habits, like smoking. The illogic there is that if they can't smoke and gamble they won't gamble. What a crock. If "no smoking" hurts business then why wouldn't smoking hurt business since most people don't smoke, and don't want to be around it? I won't go anywhere it is smoky. Isn't my money any good?

And where is OSHA when it comes to workers exposed to all that smoke?

This is correct. Massachusetts and Rhode Island did ban smoking everywhere, and business actually did go up.

When I posted this topic, I expected to see a lot of vitriole supporting smokers; I was surprised. I think it would be wonderful to see all these beautiful casinos smoke free.

I think people in Nevada are much different than people in other states. We live here because of the freedoms and one of those is the freedom to go to a different business if we don't like how one is run. One thing you will see when people post about this here is "You should open up a non smoking casino if you think it is such a good idea". TBH, I am surprised one of the higher end ones have not already tried it, or at least have large non smoking areas like Atlantic City law forces.

The libertarian attitude here makes the belief that the casinos have the right to decide what they want since it is their property, nobody forces you to go there. The marketplace has decided that smoking in casinos will make more money than non smoking casinos. Still though, I think it is absurd that no strip casino or downtown casino even has a separate no smoking section, or at least I don't know of one. Only a few local's casinos do.

Courts have ruled over and over that smoking bans are a state right. The FDA has been given the power to regulate tobacco though. I wondered when that happened if they could pass a blanket smoking ban in the U.S. I think the only way you will see smoking banned from the Nevada casinos is if it comes from Congress or FDA. There is hope that some casinos will start to make areas smoke free. I know it must be a turnoff to people that come here from states with smoking bans.

While I would be happy if the casinos went smoke free I do not believe a law should be passed to force them to do so. I guess that is the libertarian in me. It is their property and if someone does not like what they do with their property they can go somewhere else. They deserve the right to make the rules for the property that they own. Let the marketplace decide.

I go there every year for a week and will again next month, and I don't find the casinos nearly as smoky the last few years. The number of gamblers that smoke has dropped, but they have also installed high tech ventilation systems that draw it up into duct work rather than having it just float around like it did years ago. Even fresh air coming up from under the tables. They also have plenty of non-smoking rooms and several where I stayed do it by floor so there's no
smoke in the hallways when I go to my room.
