heya:

i have a couple q's for you guys re: cell phones.

1) anybody have any complaints about service/reception or anything in particular about the carriers? i will be working around UNLV area, living in huntridge, so those areas are particularly important to me. i currently have cingular/att&t. vegas seems fairly flat, so i am not anticipating dead zones like here in LA...is that a fairly correct assuption?

2) do you guys think i will need to get a vegas number? i'd just assume keep the number i have now (area code 626), but i won't be getting a land line. will i run into hastles not having a local number (setting up utilities, cable, etc)?

thx.

I have never had a problem with my cell phone in any of my travels to Vegas. I have spent alot of time around UNLV and my reception with Verizon is great. Always seem to have four or five bars (now, if they could only fix the dropped calls). I do, however, have issues when I get around tall buildings. My cell did not work in certain part of the strip where there were alot of tall buildings. I have had the same problem in Detroit and Denver too. That can get a little scary sometimes. I was working for the Colorado State Patrol and we had chased an armed suspect into the 16th street mall in denver, our radios were in the "dead zone" and so were our cell phones. that scared me more than having pot shots taken at me on a detroit freeway during a traffic stop. Back to the question though, I think the only area you will have any problem is around tall buildings. But doesn't cincular/AT&T claim more bars in more places?

lol...yeah something like that. and i do like bars

i haven't had any problems w/ my phone either, but if i am forced to get a new number, i might do some shopping around w/ providers to see who will give me the best deal, esp. if one seems to be better than another. (really don't want to lose the plan i have now, though)

Verizon seems to be garbage, but in my neck of the woods, it is all that is available. I too will be shopping for a new cell phone provider when I move out there. So I will pay attention to this thread. I need a good carrier in the city and maybe 30 miles out or so. I dont care about the wilderness because OnStar is equipped with satelite phones if I need a phone that bad. I am looking at jobs in Indian Springs and Jean so coverage is important along those routes. Don't mean to piggyback onto your thread but I am curious too.

Ok, my Sprint sucks here in Summerlin. My signal is all over the place and calls drop all of the time. And what sucks most is my husband just renewed the plan to get a good deal on a phone

We have T-Mobile and have no problems. Our phones work down on the strip with no problems either.

Default Sprint bad in LV

My son had Sprint when he first started school at UNLV... had bad reception, etc. He changed to T Mobile and has seemed not to have too many problems with his service since...

AT&T has been really good to us, they have good service around town, except for our house, which is a real pain in the ass...in our house, we always drop calls, but everywhere else its perfectly fine...

We had Sprint and it suk'd The "no service" beep drove me crazy.

Switched to Verizon and am amazed by the service....expecially the *228

Press *228 and follow the prompts. The phone sends out a signal an reconnects[for want of a better word] with the cell towers....moved me from 2 bars to 5 instantly.

The thing I hate about Verizon is that we are stuck with a certain phone for the contract unless you wanna pay retail. When I was with T-Mobile, we could buy 3 or four phones if we wanted and just moved our sim card. I have heard T-mobile is a good service out there.
