I did my time paying out for insurance, maintenance and gas. Also, I like to have someone else do the driving while I read and listen to tunes. Less stress that way - no road rage attacks to spoil your day.

Glowing accolades, horror stories, true-life anecdotes, definite don'ts welcome.

I was reading that only like 3.5% of all people that live in Las Vegas take public transportation.

From the Las Vegas data section on this site: Estimated median household income in 2009: $50,935

If I was making that much I'd have a car too - a real nice one. My original question about the public transportation in LV was prompted by the fact that circumstances have forced me into early retirement and I've had to take a 25% hit on my SS benefit. That puts me into that 3.5% category like it or not. Alot of others will probably be joining me soon.

When I ride the bus I'm forced to read and usually am very glad I was. At the end of the day I can say that even though I wasted the evening in front of the tube at least I got through a couple of chapters of something edifying on the bus.
Since you put it that way, it may well be worth it. I admit that I wish I had more time to read the books I have. Seems like the only idle time I have to read is on the toilet, and that's only a couple of pages worth.

I've taken the bus a bunch of times, with transfers. Generally the wait for each bus is @ 20 minutes. Flamingo, Decatur, Lake Mead areas. There is a certain subculture among the passengers on the Decatur route between Flamingo and Lake Mead. It might best be described as "ghetto." I don't know if it would be conducive to reading. These are regular riders and they talk about probation, parole, WIC, stuff like that.

Another alternative if you are over 55, is to rent at a place like Destinations--"active adult living" community--they have a bus for the residents that goes to local shopping centers and such. That combined with RTC might be workable. Just be prepared to see the seamy side of LV if you take buses outside tourist areas.

Good point. During the time I was catching the bus, the last thing on my mind was putting my head in a book or anything that took my eyes off the surrounding environment. I always had to keep my guard up.

Got robbed on the bus once. It was pretty funny since EVERYONE(15 people) had to empty their pockets and give up their purse. I didn't take it personal. Both men had revolvers and pillow cases. Had to give up my walkman though...

That is a good idea moving to a retirement apartment comunity. They are not exspensive and provide shuttle service for shopping, medical appointments. Casino outings.
