So, I had the pleasure to use Desert Cab, to take me from my house, 10 miles to the depot to pick up my car.
The fare (minus tip) was $30.00 (aprox)

Now I come from NYC and am no stranger to high cab fares,
but for such a SMALL distance, is such a sprawled out town?

I did some research, and Las Vegas ranked SECOND Highest cab fare in the USA

Whats your thoughts?

Jonathan

It's hard to say from the stats presented.

Note the chart shows average fares - which does not give us a real world comparison. It would be interesting to see what the cost is for a 10-mile cab ride in the same cities.

but AVERAGE factors in the fact that in NY you get to see all seven statues of Liberty.

Wait.....someone said there;s only one....but......I saw em all........

Actually, yes you are. NYC is quite reasonable, if not downright cheap when compared to other major metropolitan areas. The drop charge is $2.50 and the per mile charge is only $2.00.

Taxicab Rate of Fare - NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission

Of 32 cities tracked by taxifarefinder.com, only eight have a per mile charge less than $2. (Cincinnati, Houston, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, DC, Pittsburgh, and Detroit)

Most of the people who use a taxi are visitors who just go to the Strip. A good fraction of those visitors are here on business; business visitors are insensitive to the price of a taxi as it just goes on the company expense report.

Interesting that you mentioned is was Desert Cab. Jimmy Hoofa runs a blog that just mentioned (yesterday) that Desert Cab is getting sued under the RICO act for long-hauling unsuspecting customers. Forgive the embedded music:

actually, I do agree about NY Taxi fares.....so long as you know enough about the city to keep em from passing the Statue of Liberty 7 times......

That holds true for Las Vegas too......

Desert has been the Long Route King of Las Vegas even back when I drove cab 40 years ago.

Under Deserts rules back then....the 3 lowest booking drivers for the day did NOT work for the next day. Was a great incentive....they also had 12 hour shifts.

If that wasn't an incentive, I don't know what is.
