I was as surprised as anybody to hear this, but the numbers don't lie. Moving companies (United Van Lines/Mayflower) are reporting that NV is the 3rd most popular place to move to (behind Washington D.C. and Oregon). Nevada didn't even make the list last year. Here's the interesting statistic:

59.6% of all Nevada moves are INBOUND.

I saw that report too, seems like folks are escaping the Northeast. However, the study from United Van Lines doesn't show what area in NEVADA people are moving to. Makes no reference to Las Vegas whatsoever. Good news though, if folks are able to escape the NE and head to more milder climates and affordable areas in the country.

Northeast Exceeds Great Lakes Region to Lead the Nation in Outbound Migration, According to 2011 United Van Lines Migration Study

Moving In

The Western United States is also represented on the high-inbound list with Oregon (60.8%) and Nevada (56.9%) both making the list. Oregon is number two for inbound migration for the second year in a row. Nevada returned to the high inbound traffic list in 2011 after being considered a balanced state in 2010.

Cheap housing + entertainment seems more important than jobs.

85% of the people in Las Vegas who want to work, are working. It's not like there are NO jobs.

The days of a kid quitting high school to make six figures operating a crane are probably over for good, though.

It's still a haven for retirees too.

With President Obama opening up tourist entry to the US or making it much easier for some countries things in Vegas should pick up within the next year.

I will be one of the northeasters moving soon to Las Vegas. They are correct getting out of the cold and over taxed states here in the NE will be a blessing. Please be aware many retirees are going to Las Vegas so their economic power comes with it. Us retired folks are also very qualified to work and educated to boot. Part time jobs are the most appealing. We want entertainment coming to us and not us going to it. Las Vegas fits that bill. The weather is a given something we NE have thrown in the towel on and the high humidity in the south is not appealing one bit. So get ready Las Vegas here we come and hopefully we all enjoy the journey.

Not mentioned is the fact that people in Nevada are far more likely to be tied down by a house they cant sell compared to those in other states who get drawn in by the low cost housing. But even without that Nevada has been in the top 5 of this list probably 17 or 18 of the last 20 years so its not really news.

Well no, but it doesn't take a genius to figure out Las Vegas is the biggest beneficiary of these people coming here. People aren't moving out of the northwest just to shovel more snow in Reno/Tahoe... and they sure aren't swarming to Elko!

TOP REASONS TO RETIRE IN LAS VEGAS:
Warm, with 300+ days of sun (good for arthritis, no snow)
VERY low housing prices (biggest expense)
Best entertainment in the country (much of it actually free)
Low cost of living (cheap food/buffets, cheap gas, no parking fees)
No State income tax (this alone will attract many)
Close to many attractions (Grand Canyon, Bryce, Lake Mead, Mt. Charlston, L.A. only 4 hours by car, etc.)
Henderson just rated 2nd safest city in the country (Big consideration for retirees looking to live a quiet, carefree life)

It makes perfect sense that baby boomers from all over the country will choose Las Vegas for retirement.

Now all we need to do is to make the medical system here 2nd to none.
(oh yeah and a real professional sports team... NBA? NHL? NFL?)
