Does anyone here have any information that I can't get online? I know it's for performing and visual arts. But I am wondering about the neighborhood, crime, etc. It's off Eastern and St. Louis right by Jaycee Park.

We live on the SW side of town and our daughter would have to take the bus.

Just looking for any input especially if you have a child attending there.

Thanks
Anna

Not located in the best area, but the bus ride will be safe. The school is also safe. Your child will not have to leave the schools grounds so no worries. Biggest inconvenience will be longer days from the bus ride.

Getting into a magnet school can challenge also, based on a "lottery" system that gets hundreds and in some cases thousands of applicants competing for 30 - 50 slots.

Despite being a magnet, they are in year 6 of not meeting AYP in math.

Of course, they are a performance magnet, not a math and science magnet.

What school is your child zoned for?

The magnet program is a wonderful experience, my daughter was accepted and went to The IB program at Roy Martin Middle school. It was a great experience. She is now at Green Valley High School and it's a 15 minute walk to school.

I went to K.O. Knudson between 2004 and 2007.

When I went, the school was pretty good. I enjoyed my middle school, made friends, wasn't bullied. The classes were interesting and the instructors were fairly decent.

The most annoying parts about that middle school, in retrospect, were the fact that it looks and feels a bit like a prison (although that's standard for any middle school nowadays). Standing in lines for thirty minutes to get lunch, being tardy by even five minutes got you sent to the office, being forced to throw away a newly purchased CLOSED SEALED TOP drink because of an anal-retentive dean, and almost getting suspended because I made World War 2 animations and made sure that they weren't deleted by a creepy man who spied on all of the computers (outside of the creepiness, he was a competent instructor)...

All of this makes me appreciate the freedoms of college. Still, wasn't that bad of a school. The people were fairly intelligent and nice.
