What I want to know is how the hell did people live in LV before air conditioning??? Is that even possible? My AC went out for 24 hours one summer and I about died. What was their secret??

wet blankets on the windows.[then they invented swamp coolers] I moved here in 1962 and got my FIRST house with REAL HONEST TO GAWD Air Conditioning in 1978.
Also bought my FIRST car with REAL AC in 1972.

Ya do whatcha do.

I STILL rarely run the AC in the car and even MORE rarely in the house.

I was stationed in Yuma AZ, which is usually hotter than Las Vegas, during the mid 80's and never had A/C in my cars and my first apartment didn't have A/C either...my second Apartment did though. Since I lived in the field most of the year it didn't matter much though.

Thanks Tadtam this is a great site to read. It is put together where you can not stop reading it. It is amazing the hard ships people endured early on in Las Vegas especially in the heat how they survived ???. Las Vagas sure has had it's ups and downs but it seems like it bounces back. Lets hope the spirit never leaves so the city can be a gem in the desert.

Vegas used to cool down a bit at night. Back when I first moved in, most nights would get down to around 69-70. A warm low would be 75-76. Around midnight it would almost always be down to the mid 80s. Not exactly cool, but you never had streaks of nearly 6 weeks with no temps below 80 and lows of nearly 90. Things really changed around 2000 when the heat island effects kicked in and made summer much more miserable.

Thanks, it's a great site.

Re: No A/C; I've known several people who told me about their dad or granddad hanging a blanket over a window, letting a water hose drip down over it, and putting a large fan behind it.

On the way out here in an un-air conditioned car in July, I bought one of those contraptions that go in the car window, You fill it with water and it's supposed to blow water cooled air inside. All it did was make everyone wet.

After our second summer we couldn't take it anymore so we bought a car with A/C.

I went to sleep at a friends house one time that only had a swamp cooler. I woke up soaked from the water it was blowing out.

Before the building boom here, there were empty desert lots everywhere throughout town. The heat was absorbed into the dirt so it wasn't as bad as it is now with all the pavement, etc.
