This place is suppose to effect "Perception makeover, Economic makeover, Theater makeover, Artistic makeover, Education makeover and Intangible makeover"...Sounds like a lot of pressure for a performing arts entity.

There isn't a great city that doesn't have a strong cultural base," says Mayor Carolyn Goodman about The Smith Center for the Performing Arts. "It's equal to anything in the world. There is so much richness The Smith Center is going to bring to us. It's just huge."

Like a large stone splashing into a still pond, its effects will ripple outward toward the rest of Las Vegas:

All I can say is the people I know in Salt Lake City who are into the performance arts scene are talking about the Smith Center. Several of them are already planning trips to Las Vegas just to be there.

I think it will be a HUGE turning point for Vegas. Family and friends in NJ/NY have heard of it. So happy it did not fall victim to the economy, but instead has opened its doors. I think we'll see enormous returns (culturally especially, but also financially) on this investment.

Then make sure to support it by becoming a Friend of the Smith Center.

Not sure I've seen anything on the bill that I'm interested in yet. I'm sure there will be soon. But I'll be anxious to see if these, "Las Vegas ain't got no culture" guys will actually support ─ well ─ culture.

The only thing keeping me from going so far is work schedule conflicts. That shouldn't be so much of an issue in the near future, though.

Late seating will vary based upon the requirements of the producer of your event. For classical music, for example, late seating is usually not permitted until a break between two different pieces, sometimes not until intermission, and sometimes not at all. It is extremely important to arrive at The Smith Center with plenty of time to find your way to your seats well before the scheduled start of the performance. In the event that you arrive late and are asked to wait in one of our lobbies until late seating is permitted, we will have video monitors throughout the lobbies so that you can enjoy the performance until you are able to be seated
I am definitely glad that they will be enforcing this. I hate when people interupt during my daughter's school violin performance. People are always coming and going.

Friday evening, Paula Francis did a 1/2 hour segment on the Smith Center.

The City of Las Vegas contributed to this project via the rental car taxes paid by the tourists. Private donations built it and from the looks of it, it is exquisite and much anticipated by us locals!
