So the 70MPH winds we had a day ago, destroyed my Gazebo.
the extent of the damage I will find out when I am back in LV

Anyone else have any issues?

Yeah... my hair got messed up. It was a total disaster of epic proportions.

Seriously though, I hope the damage to your gazebo wasn't too bad. I'm surprised there wasn't more damage around town because I'd swear the winds got up to hurricane strength during some of the gusts... it got a little scary a few times.

My neighbor's gazebo is messed up. Looks like it got blown off its footings, and twisted a bit. Part of the cloth is torn on top now. They have one of the big sturdy ones too, but there's some bent tubing and whatnot due to the twisting force.

I don't know how you protect a free-standing gazebo structure against those kind of winds (which seem to happen once a year or so?) without actually pouring concrete footings and using aluminum or some sort of metal mesh instead of cloth for the coverings...

Sorry about your gazebo, Jonathan. That sucks. Same goes for your hair, log.

Thanks. Next time I'll use those concrete footings for my hairdo. I'll go "full Romney". That should do it.

A neighbor's tree blew over. That's it for our neighborhood. The highest gust here was 63 mph.

To put things in perspective, my friends and I routinely barbecued in 75 mph winds during hurricanes. (There's not much else to do -- power's out, so we'd grill the seafood first, then the poultry, then the beef.) Move the grill to the lee side of the house and the rain isn't even a big deal. Better to throw a hurricane party early, while the beer is still cold.

The average yearly (average I repeat) wind speed in Las Vegas is 9.3 miles per hour. We certainly don't have Cheyenne Wyoming's 13.4 miles per hour average wind speed, but if you are seeking the lowest average wind speeds of any major cities, head for L.A. or Phoenix which share 6.2 mile per hour average windspeeds!

But with the lower wind speeds, come more smog! Pick your poison!

I'm eventually going to end up in Tucson with their 8.3 miles per hour windspeeds.

The wind tore out gazebo up. It was a big, heavy one. Picked it up and slammed it into the wall! I couldn't believe it. Tore out a back light in the process. (this was the first year we had the house). The canvas was already beginning to look a little ragged, but we were "fixing" it here and there.

Finally gave in and got a patio cover. Love it.

When we were walking the other night, I saw that some people attach wood all around the top poles to hold the canvas in place. Not sure if they were cemented in the ground, most were just the basic size ones. Then again, they just may have been shimmied in between the back of the homes and the back wall as those yards looked as if they could only fit that much!

Sorry about your gazebo. I say get a patio cover or you will most likely be spending all your time chasing pieces of it around the neighborhood.
