Have you been to the Shark Reef at Mandalay Bay? It's not as big as aquariums in oceanside towns like San Diego, or Monterrey, but it's nice.

The pool at Golden Nugget has a shark tank in it, with a slide going through the middle of the shark tanks

I have lived in Las Vegas since 1964 and raised two kids here. I'm sure the column in the Chicago Trib was well written, but I'd bet 6 to 5 it fit right in with our marketing plan to create that Sin City image. We locals always laugh at out-of-state reporters promoting the Hollywood image of Las Vegas when we know what it is really like to live here. Well, actually we never laugh at articles about this town, but we shouldn't take them so personally as we do. I guess we're all anal here.

The worst newspaper articles were the personal attacks on the city by the LA Times over about six decades. I nearly fainted when I finally saw a positive piece in that paper a couple of years ago.

The Las Vegas Strip, and Downtown Las Vegas are primarily for ENTERTAINMENT, including gambling. But the Strip is a very small area in a very large city.

I worked in TV most of my life, and remember in the 60s directing a documentary we called, "Las Vegas, A Great Place to Live, But I wouldn't Want to Visit Here".
wow, I think I gave you the wrong impression about the article. It was very pro Vegas and families. If fact, if I remember right the title was: Vegas is no more just for grownups or something like that.

We almost moved to Vegas twice; once we were within a few thousand dollars on salary and the second time the company hubby was dealing with decided they wanted someone to move to Reno instead, hubby said thanks but no thanks. Obviously we are not anti Vegas by anymeans.

As for Pahrump (spelling right this time) we love to drive up there from time to time. We think the drive is nice and we like to visit the winery.

Don't worry about embarrassing me, I have lived with this my whole life. You had no way of knowing. I try not to criticize people even when they do make an obvious error cause I know many can't help it, but you had no way of knowing.

Friends OK?

Actually there are going to be 4 ziplines at the south end of the Strip, and possibly 5 if Tropicana gets its way. One of them starts at the very top of the Luxor (pretty cool!). Check out the map:

I'm sure you had your reasons about Reno, but just to get this on the record, Reno is a wonderful place to live. I know, I was transferred there in 1977-78, and there's a lot we still miss about it, especially the Sierras, Lake Tahoe, and all the picturesque little towns in Northern California.

Back in the day, Pahrump was all cotton farms. The old cotton gin stood on the corner of SR 160 and Highway 372 for many years even after the cotton fields became alfalfa fields. There were two filling stations and a couple of bars. You couldn't get gas past about 6:00pm, and there was no supermarket. We locals went there to hunt. Now it's just desert and too many scattered homes to even shoot jack rabbits (not that I would now).

I wasn't even sure the winery was still open. Glad to see that it is and they now grow their own grapes for certain wines. Over the years we keep hearing rumors that it is closed, only to find out that's never true. Gotta go back for lunch sometime. Thanks for reminding me.

If you want some great scenery, right inside Pahrump, before you get to Terrible Herbst, there is Wheeler Pass Road. You have to look for it because with the buildup around it it's hard to find now. Anyway, it's a dirt road up into the backside (from us) of Mt. Charleston. It goes all the way over the top at Wheeler Pass and down through Cold Creek to U.S. 95 north of Las Vegas. I doubt if you can make it over the top without four wheel drive, and maybe not even with FWD unless they have drastically improved it, but you should be able to get as far as the charcoal ovens which are well over 100 years old. You should see deer and elk roaming around up there too. There are mountain lions but I've never been lucky enough to see more than their tracks.

Friends!

actually we did have a great reson for tuning down the Reno location: at the time ;property in Vegas was about 2/3 the cost of REno and they wanted to pay the same in Reno as in Vegas. It was simply economics. WE would ahve loved living in Reno. At the time my parents were alive and lived in No Ca.

It will be my first time there so everything is new to me. I tend to like things historical or offbeat. I would also like to know some restaurant recommendations with an emphasis on places unique to Vegas.

I am flirting with the idea of seeing Penn & Teller on Sunday but the tickets are a bit out of my budget range. Is there any way to score discount tickets?

I'll be staying at a place called Red Rock Resort and will likely rely on my feet and public transportation to get around.
You cannot stay at Red Rock without wheels. There is no way for you to get anywhere. You can get away without wheels on the Strip because they got shuttles and the Duece Bus but out there you will need a car. Really you need to rent a car or stay on the strip.

I wouldn't want to even stay on the strip without a car unless it was the mid strip.
