Hello,

I bought my home here in Vegas 4 years ago. Never lived in it because I was making terrific money as a IT/Parking Manager. As a matter of fact, I was making $80,000 per year. On June 2, 2007 I was laid off due to a building owner change. I worked there for 12.5 years. I have excellent computer, managerial skills. To get to my point, I decided to relocate my family to Las Vegas on June 3, 2007. It has been close to 4 months now and NO LUCK finding employment in Las Vegas!! I have applied at every casino from IT tech support down to cashier. Still No calls. I used the RJ (LV's Newspaper, Indeed.com, and Craigslist.

One of the reasons why I moved here in the first place was all the talk about finding employment here quickly. This is not true. I have learned that if you don't have any connections here, finding employment will be tough. I'm scard at this point since I have 2 months remaining on my unemployment. I must admit, I'm considering moving back to San Francisco if nothing happens in the next month.

Good Luck to all of you who decide to move here.

I am curious about something. You say that you have only 2 months remaining on your unemployment. What happens if after the 2 months you still have no Job, do you starve?

I wish you all the very best in your efforts to find work my friend.

I wonder if they hurt Nevada's economy.

Cash Creek and Thunder Valley doesn't hurt Las Vegas at all. I hear it is cutting into Reno's tourism and gaming. Reno has nothing to offer like entertainment, luxuries, shopping and fine dining that Las Vegas has to offer. This will make Las Vegas strong for years. Not to mention all the new resorts opening up in the next 5 years.

I find it interesting that you have to go to a casino to remind you of Vegas. I personally do not gamble and I don't even equate gambling and living in Las Vegas.

EXACTLY! It is that perception that lends itself to the majority that leave within a year of moving there. If they had a great time gambling there on vacation...then they will love living there and doing it whenever they want to! Unfortunately, Las Vegas and many RE professionals out there (not ALL, olecapt) are more than happy to push that perception to those who are so misguided.

People who leave over gambling don't leave right away. Takes them some years to run through their wealth.

People who leave in the first and second year almost invariable leave over the heat.

Not being critical because I did the same thing that you did, only it was 43 years ago. I came to Vegas because I was told how easy it was to get a job. It took me a month to find one and I was scared too. Since then I have advised people to find a job before they move. It can be done. It just takes some work, salesmanship, imagination, and luck. To me it was a foolish move on our part but we were young and said if it didn't work out we could always go back to West Virginia.

Concerning unemployment insurance, the maximum number of weeks is 26 providing you qualify for the max. If your state has very high umemployment, which I doubt would be the case in any of the 50 states at this time, then they might provide for extended benefits. If the national unemployment rate is high (I think it has to reach 7%) then the Feds usually provide extended benefits. I don't believe there have been any extended benefits for several years now, so it will run out in six months, or less if one didn't qualify for that much.

I'd advise taking any job you can find. It is easier to find a job when you have one than when you are unemployed and getting desparate.

The poster blew a quote. His actual question was what happens when you run out of unemployment insurance.

The dole runs out eventually in the US. In the case of this person he has other resources including the house. He would have to run through those resources before any state help. Then the state help is limited to a period of time. At that point you would be left to charity.

The social net here is much smaller and has larger holes than the one in Europe.

How it really is? You couldn't be further out of touch. In 2006 California Indian casinos grossed more than LV, as did Macau. LV is hardly the "real deal" for gambling.

This is true, Indian Casinos made more money than Las Vegas (this is all the Indian Casinos in the US combined). Las Vegas still made more overall because of revenue from Entertainment, Hotels, Shopping, Dining etc... I hear the Tao Restaurant alone at the Venetian grossed 65 million in 2006. I think that was a record for any restaurant/club in the US.

All the Indian casinos in the US grossed 27.7bik/'06, Calif grossed over 7bil/'06, which is more the LVBS--6.6bil/'06. Macau grossed over 7bil/'06, so, LV is NOT the gambling MECCA it once was.
