I haven't found employment here in Vegas for 4 months. Read this
Hello,
I bought my home here in Vegas 4 years ago. Never lived in it because I was making terrific money as a IT/Parking Manager. As a matter of fact, I was making $80,000 per year. On June 2, 2007 I was laid off due to a building owner change. I worked there for 12.5 years. I have excellent computer, managerial skills. To get to my point, I decided to relocate my family to Las Vegas on June 3, 2007. It has been close to 4 months now and NO LUCK finding employment in Las Vegas!! I have applied at every casino from IT tech support down to cashier. Still No calls. I used the RJ (LV's Newspaper, Indeed.com, and Craigslist.
One of the reasons why I moved here in the first place was all the talk about finding employment here quickly. This is not true. I have learned that if you don't have any connections here, finding employment will be tough. I'm scard at this point since I have 2 months remaining on my unemployment. I must admit, I'm considering moving back to San Francisco if nothing happens in the next month.
Good Luck to all of you who decide to move here.

I had a friend in the IT/Telecom biz and was laid off in San Jose. He is also having a hard time finding work. Companies in the Bay Area are not hiring permanent anymore, they go for the temp and use a third party to hire you. He also says that you really have to know someone to "get hooked up". I am a Certified Cisco/CCNA/A+ guy myself and never persued it here in Las Vegas. I would stick it out because I think your just having a little bit of bad luck.

The problem isn't finding employment, it's finding employment when you have skills (like yours) that aren't sevice industry-related, or construction-related. The "tech" part of your skill set is the problem. That barely exists here, and isn't going to improve anytime in the near future. I hate to say it, but I'm not surprised. I suggest you look at the local utilities and governments for local employment. Be prepared to take a big pay cut though, and get ready for all the local trolls to come out and attack you for not being able to find work because they were able to find a job their first day here that pays $30/hour and they didn't need any skills etc. That's usually what happens in the Las Vegas forums, but it's usually b.s. This is not a tech town, or a particularly good-paying town. We are all slaves to the tourists. Since you bought your home here 4 years ago, I'd assume that you are one of the lucky ones who aren't upside down, so you could likely sell it and make something to help you on your move to greener pastures. No offense, but I don't know why anyone would move from San Fransisco to Las Vegas. I love SF, but I only know it as a tourist, so what do I know.

SF is a nice town and I use to live there. One thing I dont like is the super liberal city government full of BS. 2) Parking! did I say, NO PARKING! if you have a car, forget it.. sell it and use your scooter. 3) A nice room for rent (this is not an apartment, but a room) will run you $1500. I was paying $1200 back in 2001 for a small room w/shared bathroom in South of Market area. 4) The FOG.. overcast .. kinda makes me depressed. But the possitives are the jobs pay good! I think minimum wage is 8 bucks an hour

Dont Know
I wished it was bad luck. On Monday, I submitted 30 on-line apps/resumes. It's Thursday now, NO ONE CALLED OR RESPONSES. I'm concerned.
Thanks for your reply.

Keep bugging them. I used to review resumes for alot of companies and we hardly ever called the applicant back. We waited for the call. Keep bugging them and show the interest to the point of being annoying. What is the worse that could happen? They say no. I gave my fiance the same advice and she landed a job at Lake Las Vegas that she didn't even know she was qualified for. Be persistant, it will pay off. Most of all, good luck.

This is a little silly. The standard advice here, oft repeated, is...get a job...any job and then try and work your way into something that fits.
Now there are MBA level accountants and RNs and mechanical engineers and such who should have a job before they come here. There are also certain skills like electricians and plumbers and AC guys who can have a job in a week.
But a parking manager who can run a computer? Not likely and probably at 40K rather than 80. That is why Cisco techs here have pool service routes and heavy engineers sell real estate.
Try a contract operation. Check out the governments. Get employed somewhere then meet people and work for something better.
I also don't care for San Francisco. Small. crowded, dirty and ugly weather. Now I could deal with the Peninsula...but SF makes sense to me only if you are deeply into an alternative life style.

Why don't you do freelance networking and computer repair? I don't know the first thing about these and I get asked all the time.
You are right about one thing. It takes connections. Well, go make some connections. Even if you have to work a crappy job at Geek Squad or PC Club, you can parlay that into the job you want. Nobody likes a defeatist attitude. Leave that behind.
I'd also recommend working on your interview skills. Maybe buy a book on the subject.
Good luck!

Hello,
I noticed that pretty quickly that the LV is not a tech town. After the second month of job searching, I started looking for cashier, fast food managers, valet, etc. Still nothing my friend. Also why I moved here, I had the house empty, got laid off, made since to get a new start.
Bad move at this point
