Yes, you can still walk. Wear comfy shoes and beware of the heat during the day. It is safe at night, just ignore all the people putting flyers in your face. If it is cool and not too far, I prefer walking to taking a Vegas cab - I hate those crook cabbies!

I have been to Vegas several times and never felt unsafe at night on the strip. Probably because there are so many people around. Same with downtown. I ignored my moms advice to not go downtown at night. But I wanted to see Fremont St.

So true about how the casinos/hotels are not as close as they seem. We found that out the very first time we visited.

I am hoping to make another visit this summer. My mom lives about 120 miles from Vegas and is willing to watch our daughter for a couple days so we can have some fun.

My last trip to Vegas a few weeks ago I went alone. I felt totally safe on Fremont at night

First time I took my wife to Las Vegas we stayed (sort of) at the Imperial. When we got in we changed shoes to go walking on the strip...We walked to the Circus Circus and then down to the Mirage and Caesars and over to the Flamingo and then back to our Hotel....
NOW this was a looong time ago when we were much much much younger...BUT as I think back I wonder...What in the HELL were we thinking...

I have never seen so many skirts barely covering the hoochi coochi and so many 6 inch stilettos in a 3 block area in my life.

Yes, there is virtually no more walking along the street as there used to be. Mostly overpasses with escalator and elevator access for those that don't want to take the stairs. All the doors leading you into the hotels (for those that want the air conditioned route) will take you past all the high end stores (Rolex, Gucci, Tiffany & Co etc.). Take the non-air conditioned route outside and you are constantly bombarded by the card smacking "Girls to your room in 20 minutes or less" folks, so pick your poison.
well last week we saw plenty of walking, everywhere, streets as well as overpasses etc. I do agree, not quite as many walking the main sidewalks, but there were still a lot of people. In fact, I had forgotten how many people there can be visiting any one place at any one time.....recession in Vegas? couldn't prove it by the crowds...

That is so true and most people just do not realize this. We tried to explain that to my husband's cousins, who spent the first 3 days with us last week. They wanted to hotel/casino hop and thought they could just walk from one hotel to another, all day. Well, even if they in great shape for their age and walk 3 miles a day, each morning, they soon realized just how far everything was from everything else. We did the Flamingo/Bally's, Paris and Bellagios. Then we went back to the Flamingo and headed to Venitian and Wynn's. The next day they were content to just do New York, New York.

Dang. And it used to be fun to walk up and down the strip, in and out of the various places.

I stayed at the Tuscany 5 times in the past 8 months and the walk was fine...... 5 min from Ballys to Tuscany and all my walks felt safe.

I like the overpasses - people don't want to stop and wait so they were a great addition. Just get the bums removed from them.

Wear walking shoes and carry water. It's further than it looks but very walkable. As far as safety goes, be aware but not afraid. I always tell my male friends to carry their wallet in a front pocket. We take good care of our tourists and as long as you are in a tourist area with lots of people, you will be fine.
