If anything I think neighbors in Vegas tend to keep to themselves unless you go out of your way to befriend them.
Agreed.

I'm BBQ-ing this weekend. I'd invite you if I could.

Don't get me wrong. I'm a nice person. We are just a little private here in LV. I seriously doubt anyone checking into a Vegas hotel would be asked that question.

We are not over-friendly here in Vegas, though you will never find a more giving, caring community if you need help.
I don't get that at all. Even when I am making a reservation over the phone for a hotel in LV, they ask, "business or pleasure?" If we go to a local pub, the staff always welcomes us and remembers us if we come back in. It actually shocked me how friendly people were, even in gas stations and Walgreens. This is NOT a bit how it is in SE MI. Not even close. In fact, last weekend my husband was in town here in MI and we met family at a local bar, we sat at the bar, there were two bartenders and neither said anything more than, "what can I get you?" The place was not all that busy (the parking lot was where the party was due to smokers), especially at the bar (no VP), yet they seemed as if they couldn't be bothered.

I think that in LV, since most people are from somewhere else, it is a starting point for conversation as opposed to MI where the majority are native...so boring conversation. Now, maybe up north MI is different as it is much more rural. A few of the neighbors wave, not many though. And this is in a nice neighborhood. I had much more contact with my neighbors when I lived in a lower income area, whether I wanted to or not!

Welcoming and liking / remembering you is quite typical of Vegas if you were a pleasant customer. My point was more that Vegas people tend to value privacy.

I like my next-door neighbor. He's a nice guy. I would help him if his house was on fire, if his kid needed help, someone was casing the joint. I care about my neighbor. I still don't want to be his best bud.... and I don't believe he wants to be mine.

NLVGAL, right on having good neighbors does not mean we have to be tripping over each other. I would rather be known as the nice guy who lives next door than the pain in the ass who can not shut up. It's that way in most communities nation wide. LV has almost 40 million visitors so people living there must ask if they are on vacation how are they suppose to know if they don't. When I am in LV I enjoy locals asking me why I am there and where I am from I in turn get to ask questions and well everyone is having a good conversation. Heck when I am out and about in LV I ask people if they are tourist. I have encountered very few people who were born in LV and stayed so most of the conversations are about where you are from and why you are now living here. I believe most neighborhoods are the same people from all over the country so you will never know unless you ask.

Well, these people didn't even know if I was going to be pleasant or not! They beat me to it!

I don't know enough about what is typical in LV and not in other areas as I have only lived in MI and NV (and not long enough in NV...28 days I will be though! ) but definitely compared to where I am in MI, LV wins in the kindness department, hands down!

My SIL went to Oregon recently, her take was this: "the people were so friendly and nice the further west we went. I am not a nice person (yep, Michigander) so this was so different for me. By the end of the trip, I found myself being so nice that even my husband didn't recognize me!" So true, the drive back to MI, the further east I went, the nastier and grumpier the people got. The hotel receptionist in NM was SO nice, the ones in MO, not even a bit pleasant and they don't care what you think about it! I could have been blind and I would have known I was in the Midwest!

Weird. You always hear about how friendly we are in the midwest, and I find that to really be true for the most part. Maybe Iowa is nicer?

Kimba, you must be one of those engaging people like my late Mom. I took her to Jamaica (very stand-offish, respectful, cautious, people by culture in my experience) and she had Jamaican's inviting her to their home for next summer.

Welcome to Vegas. Be sure to see Redrock, Spring's Preserve and Mt. Maryjane-- slash that-- I mean Mt. Charleston. We just had a lot of grow-busts up there last year, so it's a local joke now.

Maybe so, I will be sure to stop there on my ride back, just to see! Of course when I made the trip east, it was January, cold nasty and gray. Doesn't make for great moods! This time it will be June, so it could be totally different. (still not different in my area of MI as there are just as many things to b**ch about, humidity, mosquitoes, rain...)

I am generally very shy, which is why it surprised me so much because I probably wouldn't have said anything to start it. I actually had to look over my shoulder because I couldn't believe the clerks were saying, "hello" to me! I'm telling you, people here seemed mad that you are coming in because then they have to do their job!!!

I actually stayed there for 6 months about 4 years ago. Moved back to MI (long story) husband stayed there for work, we bought a house in Centennial Hills, sold ours in MI, and we have commuted for visits since then. Finally, today was my daughter's last day of high school!!! So, I will be making the permanent move on the 28th. Mt. Charleston is one of my favorite places there, we go all the time! Been to RR many times, but I would like to go there in the spring or fall (I usually spend summers there, too hot to go hiking at RR) and hike some of the small trails. I have never been to Spring's Preserve. Went to Laughlin last 4th of July, loved it! Had a blast! I want to go back there too. Zion for sure. Already did the Northern Rim at the GC, beautiful! I have many of Buzz's posts bookmarked as he had posted some great ideas of day or weekend trips!

My daughter will be coming at the end of July, she is enrolled at CSN. She will do general studies for at least a year, hopefully two, then decide where she wants to be. She is sad leaving her friends and family.

Thanks for the welcome!

I use to live in 89123 no problems. Now i live in 89141 and love it. Very safe. It is 3 miles from South Point where I work.

The vast majority of them live in Summerlin and Henderson. They were talking about crime here and most of them had been the victims of some kind of theft. One of them owned a Corvette that had belonged to Sammy Davis Jr. It had been stolen from his driveway.

I was kind of surprised. I knew those gated communities had crime but I did think they would see fewer crimes of opportunity like simple thefts. I guess not. In a way it makes sense, if I was Joe Criminal, I'd go where the money is.
Why would a car Sammy Davis Jr. owned be in a drive way?
