The transit of Venus will be visible June 5 in Las Vegas beginning around 3:30 pm and peaking around 6:30 pm. It happens twice in an eight-year span (last time was 2004) and then not again for 105 years.

It's one of the rarest phenomena we can see. If you have the ability -- welders glasses, etc. -- you should try to see it.

Any of my friends are welcome to DM me for instructions on how to get to my house to view the event. I have a telescope about the size of a cannon, and the proper solar filter to see it right. Bring beer. :-)

Wish I was there to "check out your equipment" and watch the show with you. Only a good man follows the stars. I would have even brought some Strawberry Wine (Boone's Farm, for old memories.)

Here's some music, by one of my favorite bands (Wings) to watch by...

Do you have any extra filter material? I've been putting off making (or buying) filters for my scopes, and of course because I'm so lazy, I missed the eclipse and will probably miss this...

If you can provide some filtering, I can provide a couple more scopes. Wouldn't be able to get there until well after 5pm, though, and I'm not sure how I'd align the scopes during the day, if we wanted them to track properly.

Sorry, I don't have any material. I bought a bolt-on solution from Seymour Solar. Works great. The sun FILLS the eyepiece, even at 20mm.

This isn't actually that rare. It's only rare in the sense that you will be dead the next time it happens. However, it's a cyclical function, which means it will continue happening.

Speak for yourself... I'm planning to live forever.

Heaven don't want me and Hell's afraid I'll take over.

We're all pretty excited in Hawaii barring cloudy skies, that we can see the whole transit. Telescopes are set up at a few public sites but of course, up on Mauna Kea it will be quite a crowd.

I'd say not happening again for over 100 years qualifies as "rare".

Bug Bully will be here spraying right around that time...so I guess I won't be watching it. I will be inside not inhaling that stuff.
