The new remodelled rooms at the Trop are sure reasonable too and I'm hearing good things about the cheap rooms at the new Plaza. The totally new lobby at the Plaza is sure nice. Yes, NLVGal that pool at the Golden Nugget is so much fun. I did go down the water slide through the shark tank (see-through tube) and WOW...The first time you close your eyes and miss it and then the 2nd time you relax and really enjoy it.

Don't forget the $15/night resort fee at Excalibur. I stayed at Bill's Gamblin Hall and Saloon. corner of Las Vegas Blvd and Flamingo. Loved it the first 2 nights, they made us mad the 3rd...but I think the rooms were $60 on weekend nights.

Those resort fees are ridiculous. And what is a good location is all a matter of opinion. To me Excalibur is not a good location as it is all the way at one end of the strip. If I were staying on the strip I'd prefer to be more centrally located, and with fewere strollers than Excalibur.

I agree Excalibur is not in a good location, LOL. However, if you are looking to spend all your time at NYNY then the location isn't bad. I have a major objection to resort fees, and in fact won't book with a hotel that charges them...although I did notice on this trip the "No resort fees" thing was pretty prominently displayed for those properties who don't charge them, so who knows, they may be on their way out. I know The Cosmopolitan was one of them that didn't charge the fees, and as it is new, hoping it is a trend.

Try something on Fremont Street. It's a party every night. Cheap and fun! Everything is in easy walking distance even with the summer heat. High end is the Golden Nugget and it's really nice. You can't beat the shark pool.

My favorite was always Main Street Station but there are a lot of cheaper places. Main Street has great food too. I haven't stayed at the Plaza but I've heard good things since the remodel.

I would stay on Fremont and buy a day pass on the Deuce. I think it's $7 to cruise the Strip. I would prefer Fremont to Circus Circus. Much more to do and less isolated. You would probably spend more on cabs that what you would save on the room.

Main Street does have good food and I found the valet parking to be soooo easy. The Plaza also has Hash House A GoGo.

The resort fee is sort of like the airlines nickel and diming you. If you are going to charge it, just roll it into the price. You get the same amount of money and people dont feel as if they are being taken advantage of. Its the dumbest thing theyve done as a whole. Im not sure who they thought they were fooling. "Our rooms are $45 a night Sun-Thur (with a $15 resort fee)". Just charge $60. How hard is it?

They wouldn't do it if it didn't work.

People no longer buy travel from travel agents. They hop on a website and search for the best price. Most of them aren't going to check to see if there are any resort fees when they click the "reserve" button. They only find out about the fee, at check in, when they're already there and tired from the trip. Of COURSE they'll pay it. What else are they going to do? Hop back in a cab and find another hotel?

The hotels and airlines aren't doing this to nickle-and-dime the customer so much as they are to undercut each other to get business. Getting a head in a bed is far more important to the resort -- because of all the ancillary business the resort will pick up.

I don't mind so much, because I game the airlines policies. I fly Spirit airlines often. They have ridiculous add-on fees, but bargain base prices. They nickle and dime for EVERYTHING. A passenger is allowed a laptop bag or purse for free. Everything else carries a charge. So we pack a change of clothes in a laptop bag and fly round trip to San Francisco for $40. Round trip to Fort Lauderdale is $240.

Circus Circus isn't in a bad area, but you can find much better deals for your money, as mentioned. Try something like the Flamingo. Mid-strip, it's a Harrahs property so no resort fee, and usually fairly cheap without the kids running around.

Last time I was in Vegas, I stayed at the Stratosphere for a mere $31/night. The room was clean, had a pretty nice view, and the rate included free access to the tower as well as two free drinks. Had a great time.

Only downside is that the Stratosphere is pretty far down the strip (further than Circus Circus!), not really in the heart of the action. I walked past Circus Circus probably four or five times, most of them totally sloshed and well after midnight, and it never felt unsafe at all.
