Hi,
I live in Virginia.
does anyone here play online for real money?
any recommended sites? which have the best reliability and the highest sign on bonuses?
what's the minimum buy-in typically?
is the law different depending on which state in the US you live in?
You'll be hard pressed to find a site that people can play FROM the U.S. for money. They are out there and I know people are doing it, but it is more under the RADAR so to speak.
The Casino's are getting ready for online poker but right now they are all for free. Free chips, free play, no winnings.
I belong to the PPA but also read about it whenever I can. Not likely to see any movement before the November elections, but most people seem to feel legalizing this is inevitable, but still a year away.
It is STATE DEPENDENT. Utah is one state I know has already opted out. Makes it Illegal to play from Utah.
If you really feel the need to play right now, I would suggest reading online what sites accept US players. Lock Poker seems to be one, I just have never tried it so have no idea how it all works. Most online pro's are playing from Canada or Mexico right now for what it's worth. That should tell you something about the legality (and ability to play on PokerStars).
Lock Poker is shady. They have had quite a few scandals.
The safest US options are:
Americas Cardroom
True Poker
Carbon Poker
Nevada has passed legal online poker but only software providers have been licensed. We are still waiting for a casino to get a license so it can go live. When it does, it will only be for Nevada.

In December when this was approved originally the talk was end of June. That is not going to happen. The casinos are simply not ready to launch. At this point I think that a casino or two will get licensed in August maybe and be live by October. The two casino companies that own their own software have not had their software approved and the two companies with software approved do not have any licensed casinos to license the software so we are still a bit away.

Thanks for the info. With it limited to Nevada do you think these online sites will take off? There must be plans to expand. I suspect in a year or two online poker will be back like it never went away. At least I hope so. I was never a big player but i have a friend who made his living from online poker and this fiasco hit him really hard. I think he voted Democrat after 2006.
you can still play for cash and prizes on southpoints online site... but you can not buy in for cash but you will have to sit through massive advertising. you can also play on WPT's site which offers the same cash and prizes for a monthly fee.
other than that VPN FTW... as long as you dont get caught.

Nevada is too small for any serious online poker although tourists will be able to play. It is more of a beta test period. I see some higher stakes heads up play and maybe some micro games. Delaware passed online poker yesterday. New Jersey seems likely to pass it too later this year. I think the smaller states will network their players while states like California (if they pass it) will probably ring fence their players. Washington DC's city council passed online poker as part of their lottery but it looks like it will never get off the ground.
