It was not making money toward the end, but it had done well for several years. I think MGM wanted to do something else with the space. The daughter of the Jai Alai manager and my daughter were best friends in high school. For graduation they got a trip to Spain where they spent two weeks with her family in Basque Country where they showed the locals that American girls could also play Jai Alai against the local boys. Apparently frontons over there are like basketball courts are here.

The Bonanza was a very short lived casino with a wooden sidewalk out front and themed (not an accepted word, I know) after the TV show of the same name. It was a wooden building in front of the MGM facing LVBS. I don't remember how long it lasted but even by Las Vegas standards the building didn't stand long. It went up kind of suddenly and was torn down before the paint chipped.

OK, Everdeen, it's your turn in the barrel. Sorry about picking on you.

When the 15 was really the only freeway. When I-15 was finally opened all the way to LA, but ended in downtown Las Vegas because they hadn't figured out how to run it through the Virgin River Gorge yet, so going to Utah you took 91 through all the little towns along the way. Also before there were so many Californians here it was called Interstate 15, not "The" 15.

When Steve Wynn and his mother used to advertise Las Vegas's only gourmet buffet at the Golden Nugget (the only casino he owned). When the Golden Nugget was just a little slot joint on the corner of Fremont and 2nd St with the city's brightest sign, and Steve Wynn wasn't even dreaming of being a casino mogul. And, when they changed the name of 2nd St to Casino Center Blvd.

Watching Oscar Goodman escort his client, Tony Spilotro, up the courthouse steps on the evening news. You remember when Mob hits were not allowed in Las Vegas because it brought Federal attention to the real casino owners; and weasels like Spilotro would have been whacked for the things he did to bring down the Stardust ...oh, yeah, he was.

Watching music videos on Las Vegas's version of MTV, channel 21. Wondering if Las Vegas would ever have more than three TV stations─3, 8, and 13, and would they ever have local shows in color.

When Caesar's Palace was the fancy schmanciest place in town.
When the DI was the fanciest place in town before Kirkorian built the Las Vegas International and it became the International Hilton, then the Las Vegas Hilton, which is now the LVH. And I think somewhere in there before the Flamingo became the Flamingo Hilton, the LVH was just called The Hilton.

Okay, Buzz, you win. You have definitely been here longer than me.

When way before Boot Scootin Boogie, people would do the two-step at three or four different C & W dance halls in Las Vegas.

When all the downtown casinos had contests for deer hunters during deer season, and there were three or four butcher shops that you took your deer to for proper butchering. One is still where it has been for maybe more than 50 years. Can you name it?

When during hunting season you could hunt ducks, geese, quail, and doves in the Henderson swamp ...now known as Wetlands Park.

When the Jaycees held the Jaycee Fair at the Convention Center and each year had a drawing for a free house.

When you sat on the bank overlooking the field where the Cashman Center now is located and watched our own semi-pro football team play.

When everyone, except the department stores on Fremont St, was excited about finally getting a covered shopping mall on Maryland Parkway and DI Rd.

When friends of mine would tell me that these memories really don't go back that far.

Yeah, I forgot to point that out as an example of whacking people out of town.

Some fingers got broken though when caught cheating.

There was also a safe house here where they would come to town and pick up weapons then leave on their "mission". And they did do several car bombings. News reporters' cars were a prime target. And they found a bomb in Harry Reid's car before it went off.

Default Oh Snap!

Well...I'm a newbie! I've only been here seven months....just barely long enough to remember the last time this traffic light was green!
