Hi,

My wife and I are relocating to the US as i have a transfer with my company and we were looking at buying a property in Las Vegas. I will actually be working closer to Reno but would be willing to commute. Is anyone able to recommend a good area that would be reasonably safe? We are planning on having children in the new year so i would like to feel confiident that my wife will be okay whilst I am away. We have a budget of about $325K. Any comments would be appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

You cannot live in Las Vegas and communte to Reno unless you plan to fly to work somehow. it's a good 7-8 hour drive from Las Vegas to Reno.

Never buy anywhere until you've lived there for a while, that goes double for a new country. It will cost you 15% of a house's value to buy and sell it.

Rent for a while, get a feel for it, decide if you want to settle down, then buy.

You most definitely rent at first, and ischyros states the commute is way too long. Reno gets snow so driving can be bad in the winter. Reno has also had home prices plummet there I don't know how it's doing but that is something you need to find out before purchasing. Since your coming from another country renting is better to make sure you even like living there, you don't want to take chances on purchasing and a year later you and or your wife hate it and want to move, you could take a loss how much no one knows the US economy isn't stable yet and neither is Nevada's economy.

Exactly. You'd be better off looking closer to Reno.

This state is huge. Driving from Vegas to Reno is 449 miles one way!

Why not look for places alot closer to Reno like Sparks, Fallon, Fernley, Verdi, Truckee, Carson City, Minden/Gardnerville or even the Tahoe area.

Maybe asking this question in the Reno forum would be better suited.

Sounds to me....like they may well be working somewere like that non-existant Mountaintop thats covered with antennas right outside of Tonnopah....in which case Las Vegas with a non-existant commute on a non-existant airline would work.

Thanks for the info. for the life of me i don't know why i didnt think of that . I currently live 1600km from nearest city so distances don'y overly bother me but snow is another consideration...

Thanks folks for the info. I prbably shouldn't be so naive..

Now that we have your geographic perspective straight where is it you are relocating to? I would suspect mining but perhaps that is just a wild guess. That may end you up in the real boondocks where you drive 50 miles to the supermarket.
