My house has a fireplace and the damper doesn't seal well. I know the damper alone is wasting heat and AC. It's gas and it's pretty to burn but it doesn't really put out any heat either. I think all the heat just goes out the chimney. So I am wasting gas to burn it because it's so poorly designed and built. I had fireplaces in Minnesota so I know they can produce a lot of heat.

What can I do to make the fireplace useful? I know they have some kind of restrictions on burning wood, at least some of the time. What makes sense for here? Anyone have a fireplace that's really useful?

If it's a real wood burning fireplace, then you can take the gas logs out and burn wood in it, thats what we did with ours. I close the damper when not in use.

DO NOT pull out gas logs and burn real wood in a fireplace designed to only burn natural gas. If you burn real logs in a gas fireplace, you will burn your house down. A pile of wood fully ablaze burns much hotter than a gas log.

How can you tell which one you have?

If you have a gas log in your fireplace that came with the house... leave it alone. If the damper does not seal correctly, get it serviced. Those kinds of fireplaces are usually made to be 85% looks and 15% heat (if that). That's just the way it is. Live with it. DO NOT burn wood in them!

Venturi effect

Find a way to harness the kinetic energy and convert it, perhaps this may be effective:

"The resonator converts airflow energy to air oscillations which are converted into electrical
energy by the piezoelectric harvester"

Well that explains everything

We had one of those in our living room...we ended up pushing it back in the wall, and drywalled over it. It was useless and took up valuable furniture space.
