1400 sq ft home with attached garage. Kidlet and Dad home all day. Temp about 73/74 24 hours. We are on the equal payment plan so our bill is $200/ month 12 months around the year. Our last house was similar and some of our summer bills were almost $400!! I think because they are older homes the weather seals are not as tight as they should be. The landlord just had the air checked out so I think we are good there. We do have dogs so there is the sliding pario door with doggie door and that never closes all the way.

Mine is pretty much the same as it was last year. Higher bill this past month than last year by a couple dollars, but it's also been hotter this summer.

I have a 816 sqft. condo that I keep at 72 degrees around the clock. This month my bill jumped from $182 (May 12 - June 12) to $363 (June 12 -July 12)...is this abnormal? thought of calling the company being that out of nowhere it jumped 100% without me doing anything different besides it just getting hotter outside, AC working more...but $363 for an 800 sqft. condo!? What do you think is going on?

If LV has been like Phx, it was a lot hotter this past month than the May-June cycle. Also more humid.. part of "air conditioning" is pulling moisture out of the air. At 72 24 hours a day, I'm surprised your bill is not more. I shudder to think what mine would be if I did that. Check/change your filter, check the seals in your doors/windows, but other than that, it may be just temperature change. You could have them test your meter, just to be sure.

In the 5 full billing cycles since our "smart" meter was installed , we have used 8505 kwh vs 6891, 7603 in the same period of time last two years. I refuse to believe that the increase is solely attributable to increased hot weather. the increase has been between 15-25 % consistently each month since install this past February.

NVEnergy says their huge profits this year are because its been hotter not because of their rate increases, but I also believe some of these smart meters are not calibrated correctly(unless our old meter was not tracking our usage accurately the last few years and we've been underpaying)

Let's do the math. Assume a 15 SEER, 2.5 ton A/C (possibly oversize for a 816 square foot condo, as my second level gets by with that and it's well over 816 square feet). Power draw when it is on is about 2kW. 2kW per hour is about $0.25, or $6 per day if it ran 24 hours a day. So I don't see how your A/C could cost more than $180 per month in power consumption, even running 24x7. One or more assumptions must be bad. Much lower efficiency A/C is one possibility. Also, you should be able to get your house well below 60F at night with the A/C on, so 24x7 is probably a bad assumption too.

My energy usage was up 4kWh ($0.50) per day in the last billing cycle (ending 7/17) compared to the same period last year, and up about 10kWh ($1.20) per day compared to the cycle ending 6/17. No changes in energy consumption habits, so the differences are due primarily to outdoor temperature.
